corn snake substrate

I was researching over the 'net the different types of substrates people use for their corn snakes and noticed a lot of sites and people recommend aspen bedding. I also came upon websites that suggest reptile bark. I really like the way reptile bark looks over aspen. Is reptile bark safe and reliable for corn snakes? For example: Four Paws Natures Bark. Thanks in advance. =D

I belive reptile bark is safe however aspen is easier to clean and is loved by snakes as its easy to burrow in I am sure aspen is the #1 choice here but bark should be ok too.

I've used both and Carefresh, I like Carefresh and aspen combined. I'm OK with aspen too but it is harder to get and not always the same. Repti Bark is cool but they don't burrow as easily and mine had bugs (not mites) it came in the bark it stays really moist. just my opinion, susang
ps you don't have to post the same question on different sub forums.

Thank you for the information. My apologies for double posting. I had realized I posted my question in the wrong place and then posted elsewhere :X

The pet shop I sell to mixes them too. I would think the carefresh would stay wet-no?? What benefits do you find with this mix?

The benefit is I had a little CareFresh (snakes) and a little Aspen (mice) and a 40 gal viv. to clean, so I mixed it and found I like it. The snakes can burrow and it doesn't look bad. I tend to use CareFresh more for the snakes if water spills it does get wet but I never get paper mache and it seems to dry better then Aspen which is always soggy around water dishes. The downside of CareFresh is the cost which just seems to being going up, so back to mixing. My problem with either is I'm not crazy about the smell even clean YUK. I would use the prfumed stuff for the mice but I'm not sure if it is safe for the snakes???

another great option is just spending the 20 bucks to get a paper shredder and shredding all the paper leaflets they send you in the mail haha
I get bundles a day and am really considering doing this.

I'm not big on the reptile bark for a few reasons. #1 is the fact that you are HIGHLY likely to get bugs in your bag of bark. They aren't usually harmfull, but if I can see them and they crawl around where I can see, YEEEEEEUCK! I only like big bugs like tarantulas, scorpions and millipedes!

Another reason is cost - the bark can get quite costly if you like to do complete tear downs every 2 months. I know that you can work hard and clean and bake the bark, but hey, who has that much time! I'd rather spend spare time holding a snake or surfing the web!

Lastly, I have found that sometimes the bark can be quite dirty and dusty. It'a an annoying brown dust/dirt that can tend to stick to everything, yeah my aspen does much the same, but for all of the good things the aspen has going for it, I'll settle! :)

Good luck in your choice!

Rebecca
