Corn suddenly darted around viv and then began thrashing around violently. Any ideas?

Hey, guys. Long-time lurker here....

His temps are low to mid 70's on the cool side and low 80's on the warm side. He's only 4 months old and around a 1.5 feet long. He just shed a few days ago and I fed him yesterday. But last night, around 9 pm, my wife was vacuuming a room that is about 20 feet away from the room his tank is in, and half-way through the vacuuming, my daughter sat about 3 feet away from his viv to look at him. All of the sudden, he bolted around the perimeter of the 10 gallon tank in less than two seconds. (I didn't know he could move that fast--He's always moved slowly and hesitantly, never bit me, etc.) Then he started flailing around the viv, splashing his large water bowl, making aspen shavings fly around... This continued for several seconds and then he climbed the foliage to the top of the tank and put his head against the screen. The vacuum shut off and he stayed there for several minutes. He seems to be back to normal now; he just hides out and sticks his nose out to look at me. He's been very easy to handle thus far, but he's never acted like this.

His tank is on a stand that is on carpet, so I wouldn't think that he'd get much vibration from a vacuum that is two rooms away, but do you think it's likely? Could it have been anything else? It was scary b/c the little guy's always been so calm. I didn't know he could move so fast or violently.

Hi. I read this post a few times and the following came to mind: Every time I vacuum (which is a lot because I have a big, hairy white dog) my CS comes out to investigate. So...I personally avoid vacuuming for the 2-3 days when my snake is digesting, just to play it safe.

How's yours been acting since that episode?

Thanks for the response. Yeah, he seems back to his timid self lately. I just held him for a few minutes and he might have been a little more jumpy than usual, but otherwise fine. I guess it was just the vibrations from the vacuum?

There was another thread that someone posted talking about their CS doing this... It was right after she had cleaned his cage but really no apparent reason as to why he acted like this.

The thread is called "Moments like these...."
Go ahead and check it out so you can feel better about the situation knowing that it's happened to someone else :)

But i couldn't tell you if it was because of the vacuum (which would make sense since they sense vibrations easily) or just cause they felt like doing it... Either way, just keep an eye on him and continue about your routine like normal, he should be just fine :)

I'm just curious,...is your house on a concrete foundation?...Or possibly off the ground. That can determine immensely how vibrations travel. And whether your snake might be reacting to a mild earthquake in progress.
My office at work is in a modular building, and my dog reacts to every (imperceptible to me) vibration.
He scares me to death sometimes with a sudden bark of alarm out of the blue. LOL.
