Corns and Cats?

Aquilegia

Rodent Paradox
Hi, I'm planning to get my first snake a few months from now, and I was wondering if my cats are going to be a problem. I'll be keeping the snake in my room, and I won't be letting the cats in unless I'm in the room, but I know snakes are prone to escaping and I'm a little worried that they and the kitties will somehow find a way to get at each other (even through a tank and a closed door!) Does anyone else keep snakes and cats, and if so, are there any specific precautions I ought to take?

Welcome to the site!!!!!!!! There is a lot of information here. Be sure to read the FAQ section in the forums. They answer a lot of questions

I have three cats and they could care less about the snake or any of the other reptiles I have. I know others on the site have cats that watch their snakes but they do not bother them.

Make sure to have cage clips for your lid so the snake can not get out or anything get in.

i keep 2 corns, a kitty, dog/fox, fish, hampysters and soon more snakes and i have no problems with any of them... apart from the cat pawing the tank occasionally.

just make sure the cats and corns are supervised at all times if they are in the same room :)

Heh yeah, the watching thing is so cute... I used to have gerbils, and the cats would sit on top of the cage (which was just a screen top) and stare at them. The gerbils didn't mind at all - I actually saw one touching noses (through the screen) with a cat.

So I guess as long as the snake doesn't escape, we should be okay. I'll certainly keep an eye on both parties at first, though!

Lots of people on the board have snakes and cats, including me. My cat doesn't bother my snakes at all, but I don't let her anywhere near my hatchlings. The older snakes are used to her, and they don't seem upset by her presence. The fat cat is far too lazy to chase them or anything. It depends a lot on the personality of your cat.

Try using the search function and you will find other threads on this same subject.

Good luck.

My cat would gladly kill all my pet snakes, so thats why I reinforced the screen on his cage, but otherwise I just keep my cat out of the room. I can't wait till I get my red tails to see what he does. Oh one of my older cats killed my desert collard lizard. I guess the older the cat gets the less you have to worry about him getting into trouble.

Keep 'em apart - just in case!

We've just got our corn and we have 3 cats. They're very intrigued by him at the moment. Our big fatty cat even turned down biscuits to watch him.

We're trying to keep them out of the room for now until he settles down but we let them in for just a few minutes at a time so they can slowly get used to each other.

We have a fish tank as well and the cats now just think its cable tv for them and they pretty much leave them alone. One cat sleeps on the fish tank just cos its warn but he's a bit 'special' anyway!!

That said, I know my cats and I wouldn't trust them for one minute if I thought they could get into the tank and its the same with the snake. They can look but there's no way I'd let them touch!!

While we are on the subject of snakes and their relationship with other animals, does anyone here keeps rats as well as snakes? Because currently we have about 12 rats in my home although they are in very secure cages I was wondering if they would freak out if they smelt a snake.

With regards to books, these are the ones that I heard the most about:
- "Corn Snakes : The Comprehensive Owner's Guide" by Kathy Love
- "The Art of Keeping Snakes" by Philippe De Vosjoli

I have both books and I really enjoyed reading them, they are really good!

Again, welcome!

I have cats and I know for a fact that cats can and will attack snakes, as I've seen them attacking wild ones in my garden. So if you do ever have cats and snakes together, please please supervise them with extreme caution.

I get around the cat / snake problem as the vivarium is upstairs and the cats are never allowed up there. So chances are they will never see the snake unless by some calamity he escapes and gets downstairs

What a great thread!!! This is and was a subject of high concern for me as well because I have two cats myself. DannyB, it is too funny that your fat cat turned down food for the entertainment of the snake. LOL! My cats are both older, more mature cats BUT my great big fat girl gets up on my bed and watches Billy with all the fur sticking out all over her body. Maybe she is daydreaming she is in the woods and this GIANT snake is trying to get her. I don't know but it's pretty funny. My other kitty, he just watches him move around in his viv like he is watching TV. He has gone over and climbed up on a chair I have beside the viv and put his face up there right at Billy's face. Billy looks at him with the same, ho hum attitude. But with Phoebe, my fat cat, man she would eat that snake as fast as she could get him out of there. I have it VERY secure and I close the door to my bedroom to keep the cats out of there if I am not going to be home. I also don't let my cats in my room at night while Billy is so active. I don't want to wake up in the middle of the night to a cat jumping at my viv trying to get the snake through the glass...
