Corns native to Europe??

Rona

New member
Hello all, i was recently in Crete (Greek Isle) on holiday, and we went to an aquarium with species native to the land. they also had some snakes, including a couple of corns. From what i have read, corns are mostly said to be from asia and america. can anyone confirm that corns are indeed native to southern Europe too?

No that didn't worked!
And I can assure you, there are no native corns in Greece! Some ratsnakes yes,but no corns!

Did you saw anything like this? Its a leopard rat aka elaphe situla.
(Sorry but I can't remember whose pic is,I hope he/she doesn't mind posting it,thanks).

awwww. the link is working for me, try again. yahoo a little tempremental, using a yahoo album to show this pic. how do i get a pic in the thread post instead of linking it?

The guy said it was a corn, mayb it is a rat. grey with reddish spots down back.

I can't see it.Nevermind that.

To post a pic,go at reply, scroll down to "manage attachments",browse the pic from your pc,upload it and then submit the reply.the pic must be max 800X800!If not resize it with a photo program, save it and then attach it.
Hope that helps!
If you have any other Qs try the FAQ,its very informative!! :wavey:

That snake has 2 heads by the looks of it :eek1: :eek1:

There are types of rat or corn snakes in Europe and Asia but they are not the same native to North America. They are "old world" species. Some are very pretty. They are normally harder to bred then new world species.

I have seen corns in Cyprus (definatly a corn but it may have been imported to the island as it wasnt outside wild )
I know crete and islands around there could easily be home for them..

There could be a possibilty that corns have escaped / been let loose on the island and have bred but in all honesty the one in the pic looks like something else with similar patterns.. :shrugs:

Indian jungle parakeets are now "native" to the UK , Escaped from pet shops .. owners etc so it is possible corns are in europe but not native ...its obviously been introduced by people if so..

The one in the blurry pic its a situla for sure. There are no NATIVE corns nowhere in Greece.I know personally the importer who has imported all the snakes in Cyprus.Maybe some non native snakes have escaped/been let loose but it would be great luck if any could survive in the wild long enough to reproduce! Also people here use to kill everything that crawls....A colorfull snake like a corn wouldn't stand a chance!! :eek1: :eek1:

Yes.
Grass snakes.
Adders.
Oh and smooth snakes, but they are very very rare.
Also slow worms. They look like snakes, but there lizards, without legs.
