Cottonmouth....playing dead?

Found this guy the other day while looking for timber rattlers. I've never seen a cottonmouth do this. He was the least aggressive cottonmouth ive ever found, and when i messed with him he rolled belly up and played dead.

Now that's something I've never seen one do! They must be breeding with the hognose!

i doubt that was his plan. but youre more than welcome to try out your theory. lol. seriously though, that is odd behavior for a cottonmouth. ive been catching snakes, and dare i say "studying" them for about 25 or my 32 years and this is a first for me. cottonmouths just dont do that.

That is so funny. I actually had a rattle snake over here do it before. This was long before cell phones had camera's heck I think it was back when we had brick cell phones so I don't have any pictures but it was funny. My little milk snake has done this to me hense his name DOA.

That is really strange.

Very out of the norm for a cotton mouth. They seem to be more of the "I'm going to do my best to chase and kill you." I've a had one or two actively pursue me in the past.

Maybe you should have kept it and bred the first "friendly" cottonmouth line...:sidestep:

Well, thre are "fainting" goats, so why not fainting vipers? Or, he could possibly be just a narcoleptic viper. Hey, catchy name, we can market them at the next Venomous show in Columbia "Narcoleptic Vipers $350 each, Narcoleptics het hypo $575 each....

Currently we are only releasing hets for the traits mentioned above. Unfotunately there is a "het marker" that will quickly devalue this "morph". The het versions seem to slither around aimlessly and appear to almost pass out but ehn by some miracle, correct their posture and move on as if nothing was wrong...no wait that is my uncle John "with the issues" per my aunt Beatrice
