Could be a stupid question, but....

Converted Snake Lover
Can cornsnakes hiss? I could swear there are times when I've been holding our newest one, Gracie, and she's hissed at me. My boyfriend doesn't believe me, and he thinks that it's just a manifestation of my nervousness, as that Gracie's a slightly bigger snake than the ones we've had before her. However, it seems that whenever I hold her tightly (she tends to be very active when being held, and holding onto her tight becomes necessary lest we wish to see her hidden in the couch cushions) and she really wants to get away, she lets out a little hiss. I find this quite disconcerting, but I don't even know if it's possible. Mike (boyfriend) also says that it's possible that it could be a respritory problem, but I don't know... it's not all the time, it's only occasionally. Anybody know what's up?

yes...snakes hiss...

and corn snakes are snakes. i guess no question is a dumb question, but some should never need to be asked.

I don't think there's any such thing as a question that should never be asked. I'm not an expert- in fact, I'm far from it. I know very little, and I'm trying to learn. I've never heard hissing from our other corn snakes, even when they were pissed off at us, so how was I supposed to know if this is normal behavior? Thanks for your help, but in the future you may want to be more careful with the way you phrase things; this post really made me hesitant to ask more questions and made me feel like a bit of a moron, and after all, these forums are meant to be a source of friendly advice.

No question is a "STUPID" question. That's why a lot, if not most of us, are here is to help other people. Some people here know a lot more info then others...You should not feel like a moron for asking any sort of question.

I have some snakes that never hiss and some that regularly hiss - it seems to be dependent on their mood and general disposition.

I hope you will continue to learn here, and to ask as many questions as you like.

There are some questions that shouldn't be asked, such as "Should I get a corn snake or a burmese python for my first snake" for example...

However, asking questions to which you don't know the answers and you would like to learn from those that do is a great thing.

For all those that pluck up the courage to ask there are probably many more that don't want to be seen asking, or don't even know that that is something they should know, and so everyone learns.

Wait... a burmese python is a bad idea? Thank god you said something... I have an internet order to cancel... :sidestep: :)

Yep. Don't worry about abrasive replies, CreepyCrawlrGrl. Every forum, of any sort, that I've ever been on has had users put off by unfriendly replies to their questions or comments. Sometimes it's based on assumptions, other times it's cuased by unclear thoughts and/or poor writing skills on someone's part. The point is, ask all the question you want! As long as you're serious, people will take you seriously and answer your questions the best they can even if every so often you get some reply that's not to your taste- err or anyone elses (sigh)...

Cheers,
Jason

Back to the question

That was the first question I ever asked here, I never got a conculsive answer but... answer to stupid question.

:shrugs: there are some things you need to know about having a snake. First, all snakes have the ability to hiss, it is what they do when they fell threatened. Second, you should never hold a snake tightly, usually they run around like that because they are warm. It is better to constantly rotate your hands for the snake to move. I advise not listening to Mike because i dont think he knows to much about snakes.
