couple noob questions

nightmaredisco

Beardie pro, snake noob
1. How long do I wait to handle my snake after feeding him?
2. I have been told that their is a device that controls the intensity of the heat of a UTH, what it is? I have a Zoo Med UTH and my snake is separated from it by a bath towel (folded).
3. How and when can I sex him?
4. Is there a way to estimate age depending on length? I know my little one is pretty young, he is 19".

Thanks for your help!

1. How long do I wait to handle my snake after feeding him?
48 hours is the norm!

2. I have been told that their is a device that controls the intensity of the heat of a UTH, what it is? I have a Zoo Med UTH and my snake is separated from it by a bath towel (folded).

You will want to get a thermostat, I know a lot of people here use habastat (sp) I use one from "the climate doctors. "

3. How and when can I sex him?
http://www.cornutopia.com/Corn Utopia on the Web/- Sexing corn snakes - intro to vid clips.htm

I would sex now because it will be harder to do without a probe when he is older!

4. Is there a way to estimate age depending on length? I know my little one is pretty young, he is 19".

As a guess, I would say about 6-8 months. Pure guess based on my personal experiences.

:) good luck!

Thank you very much! I have bought the zoo med thermostat thingy from amazon. 1 more question, IF I have a female, do they lay infertile eggs? As I said in my intro, I am a beardie momma, so I'm just wondering if they are alike in that way.

It is possible that she will, but I think it's unlikely (I haven't heard of it discussed much). I say it's possible because we just recently had a pine snake with infertile eggs (sadly she had to be put down because she had scale damage near her cloaca that did not allow her to pass them even with help). Hopefully someone with more experience with female corns can give you a better answer! If you are concerned though, you can provide her with a humid hide box with the reptile moss they sell at pet store. So if she were to lay infertile eggs she would have a place to do it.

Well, I haven't sexed him yet, I'm going with "him" until proven otherwise, but he's still a baby. I was just wondering if it were possible. Thank you

Yep! Definitely possible. I sexed all my little amel hatchlings a while back using the popping method and it was pretty awesome. I used to have the breeder sex the snakes I have by popping, but was always worried about doing it myself until I watched Kathy's video.

Thanks for that link. I didn't wanna try popping my little monster but that video made it look much easier than I thought it would be. I'm gonna try it soon.

Females can & do lay slugs even if they ahve not been bred. That's how I found out one of my males, was actually a female. Had I known she was really a girl, I would have paired her this year, but there's always next year.
