Creamsicle %?

I have a male creamsicle. His parents were a creamsicle and a sunglow. He is a vibrant orange with very little if any red. As he is only half creamsicle, would his babies be considered hybrids as well? His grandkids? How much emoryi blood is needed in a cross to be considered cream or rootbeer? I have a striped amel female for him. My goal is to produce some creamsicle stripes in a couple generations. So as long as the babies have the orange color and not the red color would they be creamsicles? Thanks! Jennifer

This is a REALLY debateable subject that everyone seems to have different views on. Personally, I would say that after 12.5% emoryi blood it kind of becomes superfluous, really. So... I would call his grandkids 'cornsnakes with emoryi background.' Another couple generations and I'm not even sure if it makes a difference anymore. Now, I'm going to run away before people start baraging me with how pure corn lines must be and that every corn is going to have emoryi blood soon if not already.

...See ya. :sidestep:

Smart kid... *lol* Your right though, pue corns are pure corns and creams/rootbeers are intergrades... Can't win for losing can we... :shrugs:

In my opinion (and as always your mileage may vary) as long as YOU know that this animal's descendants have ONE creamsicle animal in their lineage, it'd be reasonable to label them as Creams/Rootbeers/etc.

So, if you bred to the Nth generation and you know that THIS animal is in X, Y or Z's heritage... X, Y or Z is a Cream/Rootbeer/etc.

And just to clarify this:

He's not "half creamsicle" - he's ALL creamsicle.

"Creamsicle" isn't a species - it's "A visually amelanistic animal who has both corn and Emoryi heritage of whatever percentage."

Now, if you knew that his granddad (on the Creamsicle side) was Emoryi, then you've got an actual percentage to work with... Yours would then be 25% emoryi, his offspring if he was bred to a corn would be 12.5% emoryi, his grandkids would be 6.25% emoryi and so on.

But if you don't have a known percentage of emoryi (or a known percentage of corn) ... then all you can say is that "this animal has an ancestor who is a known creamsicle emoryi/corn hybrid, therefore this animal is also a creamsicle."

Thank You!

Thank you all for your replies! They helped clarify this subject for me. Thanks again! :wavey: Jennifer

Personally, anything with other blood is a hybrid to me...I don't care how far back in it's pedigree it has other blood...but that's just me! lol

I like pure corns...lol

Nice cream though, I'm not a hybrid fan (as I am sure you can tell) but yours is very pretty! :)

I think this is where my opinion stands too. Yeah, there might be a bit of hybridisation between any snake we don't know about - but if you know about it, you might as well tell people.

I think keeping the genetic integrity of corn snakes is a good thing but when it gets to the point that you can't tell the difference visually then I don't think it matters any more, as long as corn snakes still look like corn snakes in one hundred years I think we'll have done good enough. The problem is, each breeder is welcome to make their own rules. If he's known to be cream you'd be doing the gene pool a favour by not breeding it to a pure corn snake. Besides at 1/8 emory you're not really going to have much creamsicle look anyway so why not breed a pure corn instead.

There will always be someone out there who may want to know, and will appreciate the info on the background.

Some folks on this site are working with emory/corn morphs that really look nice; a female from one of their lines would make for a sweet breeding pair. I'm partial to the striped creams I've seen :*)
