Mariska,

I am sorry to hear of your loss. I have never heard of symptoms as you describe, but I have seen reptiles look very "angry" just before they die. My view is that it is an expression of pain.

People may make suggestions, but you will only ever know for certain what an animal died of if you have a necropsy done. This is like a post-mortem for humans, but done by a vet, and with samples sent of to histopathology labs.

Best Wishes, Skye

yes i know

i know i have to take her to a vet...and yes it is an expression off pain i agree totally in that....but she lived for a couple off hours since i found her like that... i didnt get to take her to a vet...just to be sure i had put her in quarantine in the other room...(she was always apart from the other adult snakes, just my lazyness i guess...i like to keep snakes apart till alduldhood so i can feed them as often as i like without taking them out off their cages) and i guess and hope thats my luck if it might be any discease i never heard off....when i found het like that i put her in the other room...extra moist and extra warm...hey what do i know...i aint a vet...so i do what i think is best...in quarantine...and warm and moist...to rule out any virusses right?...i have been calling vets...and reptilian vets are quite rare in holland (and yes i sent marcel a email too:)) so to get to a speciallised vet it took me an appointment and 2 hour drive...by the time i was ready to go the snakes died...i will be sending her to determine the cause off dead...but i am not sure if they can find braindamage or not...
i have spoken to a friend who has a lot off knowlegde, and he thought the same as me...braindamage, cause corns ussually dont have disceases which make them act this way...i actually thought i had a case off BDI in a corn!!!which is stupid offcourse...but i really didnt thing what else to do......
anyway id like to hear oppinions.....and she is sent to the vet...and whatever outcome...id still like to hear oppinions...i will know eventually (in a couple off weeks) and i will let you know ofcourse...but id like to know on forehand what it might have been and what to do incase its a discease and i my lose more off my snakes...she was in the same case as my snow motley....one loss is terrible....two i coulndt handle...especially that one(which i traded with marcel hihi)
anyway any replie would be more then welcom right now!!

What kind of substrate do you use in the little corn's cage? If you're feeding it inside the cage, impaction could easily have been the cause of death.

i cannot be anything like that...I always feed my snakes seperate from the others in plastic containers...three reasons...its good to feed snakes apart from eachother period and since i dont like the snake to be stressed its a good opportunity to check on the snake`s health...also i get to clean up the cage if necessary :)

Mariska,

Don't be too quick to discount the possibility of impaction. I NEVER fed my hypobloodred female in her viv, and yet she died from what I FIRMLY believe was an impaction of aspen shavings, which then perforated her bowel. I could be wrong, because I did not have a necropsy done, but I think that is what did it for various reasons.

However, even if that isn't what happened to my baby, I believe it has definitely happened to others here on this forum. So, ingestion and impaction CAN occur, even if you do not ever feed on the substrate.

i agree totally on that...there can always be some substrate left on de snake or mouse...and even some little snakes cannot digest very well and causes impactation, but there are some signs of impactation...one of them is a darkness on the bellypart(not like the really little ones which mostly have that) and the belly will start to swell most off the times...
in this case i found the snake curled up and cramped(especially from the head down and not the end) while the day before she was perfectly fine, thats what strikes me the most...i have had snakes quite some years now...and i have experienced some illnesses, infections, bacteria, even poisoned(yes sorry overdosed flagiel in my first year:( but she made it alright)...eggbounded snakes and young born uncomplete(no eyes...no upper yaw...wrinkled) over the passed err id say 10 years maybe even more...so i can fairly say i am not unexperienced. i just never seen anything like this, and i want to know what it was...
so i didnt mean to hurt anyones feelings or anything...i just am able to rule out some things to make it clearer to you all so you can make better judgement...
mariska

You certainly didn't hurt my feelings, so don't worry about me. :D

I just wanted to make sure you knew that impactions can happen without necessarily feeding in the vivarium. You do, so everything is A-OK!

(she was always apart from the other adult snakes, just my lazyness i guess...i like to keep snakes apart till alduldhood so i can feed them as often as i like without taking them out off their cages)

You said that you feed in plastic containers, but earlier you made the above statement, which is why I asked about your substrate and about impaction.

~Kristine

true:)

but the little ones i keep on paper and not on shavings...this one was adult and in a cage with one other...
