Defrosted Rodents :(

So my shipment of mice arrived at my house today (I was here when they arrived), but the tracking said they were supposed to arrive yesterday. When I opened the box, the packages and the mice were still cold, but they aren't completely frozen. I quickly popped them in the freezer, but do you think they're no good now?

In my personal opinion I think they are still good. If they were warm or room temperature then I would throw them away. You should contact the company you purchase them from and inform them of this situation, hopefully they will resolve this and offer you a replacement order at their expense. Good luck!

Thank you for your replies. I did indeed contact the company right away and they offered to ship me a new order (shipping cost at my expense), but I've decided to try feeding one of my snakes one of the current mice and if they don't regurge or get sick, then I think the mice should be okay.

Really, they were a day late and the company wouldn't replace them? What company was that, if I may ask?

It was Layne Labs but it was my fault they were late because I accidentally entered the last four digits of my phone number (2373) instead of my house number (3373) for the shipment.

im curious to try Layne Labs at some point...they seem to have reasonable shipping prices ontop of prices for rodents...are they usually decent quality?

I recently received 300, 1 day old mouse pinks and they were of good quality.

Their 1 day old mouse pinks aren't as small as rodentpros but at least there wasn't 50 or so broken limbs at the bottom of the bag. I would definitely recommend them.

Their quality has always been really good and I like that you can order smaller quantities.

as i only have one snake currently...that may change at the end of september lol...i also like that you can order smaller quantities and seem to be able to keep certain quantities within the same shipping price range.

Sounds like they skimped a bit on the dry ice to save themselves shipping. My last order from ARS had 15+ lbs of dry ice. Probably would have lasted a good 3 days all boxed up.

I think that they should be ok as long as they were still cold. It doesn't sound like they were to skimpy on the ice though. I have had shipments take a week and there still be tons of ice left. We haven't even been that hot either. I wish Layne labs wasn't so expensive for me but they just aren't very cost effective for the amount of snakes I have.

I don't think they skimped on the dry ice. Usually there's a good size chunk (it's fun to play with!).

When I first got my snakes, I looked into all of the major rodent suppliers and remember finding that Layne Labs was cheapest overall - maybe just for the quantities I order, though?

I decided to just feed one of my snakes tonight, Orville, since he seemed the most ready to move onto hoppers. Hopefully he won't regurge or have any negative reactions. He sure took it willingly enough.

I'd actually be more concerned about the pinkies being spoiled because they're smaller (and hence thaw out faster) and I also ordered a smaller quantity of them, so that would also make them thaw out faster. Neither of the pinky-eating snakes need to eat tonight, so I'll have a few days to think it over and decide whether I want to risk it for them.

Thanks for everyone's input!

I've been using LL for a while now, & overall, I like them much better than RP. Quality is much better, IMO, their turn around time is much faster than RP & their customer service has been great. On an order I had a couple missing mice, & I called & told them, & they told me to phone in my next order & remind them. They sent more than the number that was missing in the previous order.

Orville happily took his first hopper on Friday evening and I gave him extra time to digest. He seems just fine and had a very big poo, so I think the mice are fine.
