dehydration...

last night after changing my snake's water, i was placing it back in the enclosure and some splashed onto norbert. not a big deal, but then...i noticed his breathing got rather heavy and he seemed dizzy or something. he started licking off droplets of water from his body with his tongue and then he actually slithered a couple inches up the glass and licked droplets of their, too. i keep his water bowl filled all the time and change it daily and he's been lying on the floor next to it for about three or four days. he's not moving a lot :( anyway...when i saw this behavior i decided that he needed a smaller cup of water that was closer to where he lay in case he isn't strong enough to locate his big bowl, so i got out a table spoon and put a few drops on it and put it about an inch from where he lay...within a minute or two he was lapping it up.

now...at the moment my apartment doesn't have air conditioning, it's almost fall now so it's getting a lot cooler, but the temperature in my apartment during the day on most days (when i'm at work) is around 80 degrees...his thermometer has read 80 degrees almost all summer long, 85 degrees when his lamp is on. is it too hot in there for him? could this be affecting his shed? could this have anything to do with the regurge? i could move him for a few days to my friend's house where it might be cooler, but i'm afraid the change might stress him out too much and just complicate things. any advice would help. thanks.

I'm afraid I haven't read your post about the regurge, but, from this post, you shouldn't let your snake get any cooler. In fact, you may want to raise the temps, or at least keep the light on if it keeps the temp around 85F. Definately get a much shallower water dish...it sounds as if your snake is either too weak to get into the bowl, or just doesn't know it's a water source. I sometimes have to put new hatchlings in their water dish so they know what/where it is. Dehydration goes along with a snake that isn't eating well since they become too weak to move around alot. A very shallow water dish, such as the plastic lid from a coffee can, can make a world of difference. Getting rehydrated may help your snake's eating. Good luck!

thank you, susan, that's a very good idea...a coffee lid. i think i will do that for a while until he regains his strength.
