Freya, my emoryi is still not feeding, she shows no interest at all for dead food items. She ate a live pink 11 days ago or so and digested it 100% well, then 6 days later I force fed a pink which she also digested. But she still has no interest for dead items. I tried to force feed a a slit fuzzie today, it was halfway her throat but she spit it out. Getting live pinks/fuzzies is a hassle and not very nutricious of course. The vet suggested syringe feeding fluid cat food. I mailed her already after Freya refused dead 6 days after the live pink but she did not reply...

Would you get to syringe feeding cat food or maybe brumate her for 2 or 3 weeks to hopefully 'reset' her? She is alert and out and about a lot (does no ever rest in her hides?!) and not acting sick... I can barely see her backbone but it is starting to show now... woudl she survive 2 or 3 weeks of brumation?

I almost think of giving her away to someone who wants to give it a try in turn for keeping her if she bounces back... I can hardly stand this no more. After every failed feeding attempt I feel very sad and almost angry at her :shrugs:

I am so sorry to hear about the problems with Freya; it makes me all the more grateful and hopeful that all stays as well as things have been with my own animal menagerie. I understand your frustration about getting her to eat; I dealt with the same after my cat had his diabetic seizure & induced coma this summer. It's painful and awful, not to mention stressful for both you and the animal. While I have no advice (sadly enough), I am keeping my fingers crossed for you and I do hope for the best...

The vet checked her out and said she was negative for harmful gut fauna, right? I don't know if I like the cat food or brumation ideas. If anything, I would think that elevating temps might be a better idea. I guess I'd see if she'll take two live fuzzies in a session. I wouldn't force-feed f/t to a snake that readily accepts live food. I know it's a pain, but...

Feed live. They are no more or less nutritous than f/t, just you have less chance of bacteria. She'll probably eventually switch over, but I wouldn't force feed if she'll take live on her own. It's stressful for them. I had 3 babies that wouldn't take f/t. I just continued to feed live. Eventually most of them will switch over.

I agree. Feed live until you get her eating regularly, then you can try to switch her over to f/t. It can be done successfully. I have a ball python that had never eaten anything but live mice before I got him. Now he eats f/t rats with gusto. It was a long, worrying process, but we made it through with a lot of patience and a little Mouse Maker.

Good luck with her.

Like Meg said, live doesn't have any nutritional differences from frozen mice. Frozen is just easier for most people, and doesn't carry bacteria or parasites.

I can't really give any more good advice than what's already been given here. :)

Sorry Barbara, but where did you hear this nonsense :shrugs:

I mean that pinkies are less nutricious then fuzzies and bigger mice AND cat food (the latter I only assume cause cat food is a complete meal and pinkies miss calcium too much).

But I have good news, yesterday evening she ate the slit mouse fuzzie I had tried to force feed. I left it in her viv, decided to play a little 'chase and catch' with it and she kept her eyes on it. I put it on the plastic lid again and after a couple of hours she had eaten it!!!! :crazy02:

Thanks for all your replies!

She has tested negative for a lots of things, there were hardly any bacteria at all in her guts... :shrugs:

Just this moment someone called me cause he had seen my ad for a pregnant mouse or someone with a litter in my neighbourhood and this person advised me to syringe in milk for baby cats and some water to flush the remaining milk in her throath it into her stomach, this would really jump start her stomach again.... anyone heared of this before? Could it be harmfull or should I give it a try anyway? The guy said he had loads of experience with snakes...

I got Lil to switch over from live by first of all offering her stunned, still twitching fuzzies, then after a couple of feeds like that, I used pre-killed but still warm fuzzies, then tried warm f/t.
I know this may horrify some people but because the stunned mice pee-ed in the feeding tub when she started eating them and she was really excited over the smell, I only rinsed it afterwards, instead of thoroughly washing it before trying the pre-killed, and I use that same tub just for her feeding so she gets excited and ready to feed as soon as i put her in it.
(Meaning I didn't have to worry about any germs from the other snakes in there. Now she is eating the f/t fine with the tub being properly washed out)
I hope this might help

Thanks, I'll keep it in mind! I only can't seem to find anythign she gets excited about.... only a crazy dance with a f/t prey seems to trigger something in her brain....

So do the crazy dance. A well fed pinky will have plenty of calcium from the milk in the stomach. The snake will do fine. Don't force feed milk, cat food, cats...anything. Just either feed live and gradually transition, or do a dang crazy dance 'til the cows come home if that's what works. I'd never willingly force feed a baby that will eat on it's own.

It's not a baby, but I guess that is not really relevant.... I'll stick to the crazy dance and get prepared for the cows ;)

I wouldn't give her anything at this point. You said she ate the fuzzy, right? Then she seems like she's doing just fine! Offer her another meal in about a week & see what she does with that.

She has eaten a fuzzie herself, but after 5 days it came out only 3/4th digested with dark brown/reddish close to fluid poo... today I got me some kittenmilk, which has been advised to me by a breeder to 'restart' her stomach. The vet assistent where I bought it aid it is a good idea for nutritients anyway.... I syringed some today and wanna offer her a pinky tomorrow or the day after.... I allso bought a red light so she has warmth during the night too now.

Keep me posted, ok?

I guess she would be out of the photo session, hu!? It would be better to leave her alone at that stage, not to stress her unnecessarily.
