Did my snake die?

Did my snake die? He's not moving, even when I nudged him. He's very pale, his eyes are cloudy.

...I didn't feed him for 17 days, but I don't think that would have been it? That's only a few days more...

Maybe the temperature dropped too much? The nights have been colder here recently...

Anyway, I hope he's not dead. Could it be his shedding? Or would he still move?

pick him up. if he does not move he is dead. If he is a baby then yes not feeding for that long could kill him. If you didn't have an undertank heater than he could be cold...but probably would not kill him. A snake in shed would still move.

Sounds like he's in blue but that shouldn't be a factor in anything. Pick him up - if he's totally limp and unresponsive, then he's either dead or getting that way.

A 17 day gap between feeds would be fine for a healthy adult but not good for a hatchling. Depends how old he is and what condition he was in, as to whether that was a factor.

Temperatures are important. Too hot or too cold can kill. What are you using to heat his tank, and what are the temps at the warm and cool ends?

As with most animals, when he dies he will void his bowels. They're bodies also shrink inwards as their muscles relax. The only time I trust that they're actually gone, is a) if they're at the vets and have been euthanased or b) if they're at home and they start to smell.

17 days of not eating is far from ideal, but it won't kill a healthy hatchling. They can go over a month with no food if they are healthy and their environment is okay. You stated that 17 days is "only a few days more." What do you mean by that? How long have you had the snake? How big is it? How often and what were you feeding it?

Maybe your snake is ready to shed, really chilled and unresponsive. Is your tank heated? You say that it's been getting "cold." What do you mean by that? Healthy snakes move even when they're getting ready to shed. Cloudy eyes and being unresponsive don't sound good. You might try flipping it onto its back as Old School said. You might also try picking it up and draping it across one finger (or arm if it's an adult-sized animal). If it's alive and your temps are above 60 F, it won't hang without moving.

There are a lot of mysteries in this big old world. Will the sun come up tomorrow? Will my snake shed? Will the moon fall from the sky?

Is my snake dead? Come on, give me a break. Is the pope Catholic? Is a frogs butt water tight? Do ducks fart under water?

DO ducks fart underwater? They must, I guess. The "quack" may have evolved as a cover-up mechanism (like the human cough).

underwater farts are the worst ones. not that i know from experience.

well he never stated it was a hatchling. so a health adult even a juvi could go 17 and be fine. but why just poke it. if your willing to poke your own pet to see if he'll move. why not pick him up and find out. roll him over, do whatever to see if its alive. can you tell me if my snakes dead? idk, id be afraid if i could answer it for you. you dont know me but i was in your room and yes your snakes dead. what a weird question. i hope noone ever asks me anything of theirs is dead.

C'mon, guys. I assume that the OP is hoping that the snake is just chilled, but likely afraid it's dead. Haven't you ever been in denial?

Cold snakes can seem dead, and it can actually be hard to tell for certain if you don't want to injure the animal. Hey, cut it and if it bleeds it's alive - but that's not the kindest thing to do.

Now I've got to go find a duck to swim under for a while. My analytical mind demands an experimentally proven response to Wade's farting question.

Do ducks fart? I never heard that birds farts. :poke:
