difficulty with pictures

I have a number of pictures that I'd like to post but seem to keep running into the problem of them being too big. If i crop them, nothing of interest will be visible. What is the best way to downsize a picture while still keeping the image clarity? for reference, I've been taking my pictures on an ipad/iphone and trying to edit them on a lenovo thinkpad.
