dipping head in water

every couple minutes (for about the 20 minutes i was able to watch), my snake was dipping his head in the water bowl then going away from it, adn then coming back. when i walked in, he was in his water bowl. i have my air set to 76 during the day so i cant imagine the cage temperature is too high. his water was a bit low (was on vacation) so he could be dehydrated. could it be mites? i saw no evidence, but it seems like something a snake would do to rid himself of bugs...
thoughts??

Some corns just enjoy playing in water. You might try giving him a chance to swim in a large bucket, pan, bathtub, etc. You're correct that they'll soak in water if they have mites or if they're too hot, but what you're describing doesn't sound like soaking. (If the snake has mites, you'll see them drowned in the water bowl, by the way.) It sounds to me like you have what my kids call "a swimmy snake."

I agree i have a milk that loves his water and a snow corn, both are healthy, one wont drink for days then goes back to the water over and over to drink for hours lol

When they dunk there head.. watch him.. u can see him drink and swallow~ :)

Some corns love water, while others want absolutely nothing to do with it. Makes you wonder if it's the personality of the individual snakes, or goes way back to the different regions of the country the original corn snake breeding stock came from. Maybe a particular line was in closer contact with water while in the wild. Who knows! Either way, it just sounds like you have a Michael Phelps snake ;)

Kaa loves to lay in his water bowl. The house is usually around 83 here and he goes under the water and just lays in his bowl.

I've seen my snake do what you are describing in winter so I don't believe it is temperature related or mite related because mine doesn't have mites. I just sit and watch, I love watching her drink too! So IMO there isn't anything to worry about this behavior. I hope this helps ease your mind some.

I agree with all of the above. I would also like to toss in the possibility of the snake dipping it's head in the water to loosen the scales on it's head if it's getting ready to shed, because we all know they shed the head first :D

That's true, my Brass would soak for a few days - YES entire days before she even went blue. Then she'd follow the normal shed cycle. I use past tense because I recently had to sell her, but she is in good hands and will come back to me if they can't keep her for any reason.
