Disinfecting used viv

I purchased a used viv from someone on craigslist the other day. Her snake had outgrown it. I got a 20L critter keeper, uth, hide, heatlamp and waterdish all for $20.00. Don't really plan on using the waterdish. I thought about scrubbing down the hide and running it through the dishwasher on "sterilize". My question is what should I use to disinfect the viv? I was thinking part bleach and water, but figured I'd ask first.

I swear this corn snake thing has become an obsession. I have one corn now in a 20 tall. Last night, I bought an exo terra 18x18x24 habitat and this used viv. Lol now need more snakes!!!! :dgrin:

I would use like 3% bleach to 97% water? Like just a little bit of bleach. Otherwise, soap and water works really well, and I would wash it out after you use the bleach anyway.

Yeah, I'd use a dilute bleach solution, and then rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse, and finally rinse some more. You don't want any residual bleach.

Soap is great but doesn't tend to kill all the microrganisms as bleach will. 3% bleach solution highly recommended.

The only problem I could see with using the dishwasher on sterilize would be it might make it too hot for the vivarium and warp the plastic or glue of the Critter Cage with all that steam. That being said, steam is the best and least intrusive natural killer. If you do decide to steam the viv in the dishwasher, let us know how it turns out. I'm interested to know if the tank holds up well to all that heat.
