does anybody use a feeding dish?

wud u advice it becuz chipping always seem to get on my pinkies and they kust be anoying for setvo so thinking about using a plastc feedind dish what do u rekon?

As your from the UK i would sugest buying some cheap ice cream from asda (2 litre eather chocholate or strawberry) and use the lid for a cheap feeding dish if you feed in the viv.

My main recomendation though is to get yourself a large lunch box or similar and feed your snake in that instead of in the viv. Just remember to put 2 or 3 mm air holes around the outside of the lid and leave the snake in their for upto an hour or so to eat in peace.

well i do feed in viv and i have a small lid simular to a ice cream lid just smaller in size. see i dnt feed out of viv cuz sum tyms she doesnt take it stright away sum tyms she does.. sumtyms she myt wait for 45minuets or soz ans then she like to go stright to her warm hide to digest it...

I use large CHEAP tupperware containers with a strong lid...and burn airholes around the top edge...very inexpensive and will last a LONG time...

If I feed in the enclosure (I do with most of my hatchlings)...I actually cut a paper plate into 4 to 8 pie shaped wedges (I have these things all over my house....LOL) and feed on those...then just throw them away.

I never though of paper plates for hatchlings. I'll have to remember that.
Scotty if you have something you can use then use it instead as it will have the same effect, IE reducing the chance of substrate being ingested.

I used to use paper towels...but when you feed wet frozen thawed they tend to stick to them a little bit...

Sometimes they will stick to the paper plate as well...especially if the snake doesn't eat right away...so I always turn them belly up so the hatchling can grab them by the nose (when they sit belly up...the face generally points upward and doesn't contact the plate)...I have watched some of the really little ones not be able to get them off the plate when they are belly down...seems they weren't strong enough to get their jaws under the mouses head when it was sticking a little.

thanks agen for ur help this site is tops... lol. good find thanks to good old google ur all so helpful lol. (oh btw ull never get rid of me now lol)

Feeding Dish

I use a feeding dish with my corn(Caesar). He really loves it! He uses it to help the pinkie go down to his stomach, since he is just a hatchling. :flames: :sidestep:

I do this also with a little twist for my hatchling. I place a sheet of paper towel on the bottom of the 6 Liter container along with a hide. I then place the pinkie at the opening of the hide. After doing this i bring charlie over from his cage place him next to the pinkie which he grabs, swallows then goes into the hide. I then put the lid on securely and leave him for an hour. When the hour has passed i simply remove the hide, lift the paper towel with charlie and allow him to slither into the other hide in his cage. I then close the lid and leave charlie be for the next 2 days

Generally I feed outside the living quarters. But there are always exceptions to that rule! I have a few snakes that prefer to be left alone, nobody watching and lights out before they will eat!

In this case, I toss in a 4"x4" cardboard drink coaster (like they give you at a bar or restaurant). Drop the prey item on top, close up the tub and voila!

Sometimes, I stay in the room but just sort of ignore the snakes. I have noticed on many ocassions that the shy snakes will eat right there on the coaster and tend not to drag it's meal off and around it's home.

Works great, perfect size and then the next morning I go through and toss out the coasters. This also makes it rather easy to toss out any uneaten meals.

Now some of you are wondering how you get cardboard bar coasters? Well we used to have three other room mates a few years back that all worked in the restaurant industry. Around the same time, we also threw a ton of parties, so they were brought home by the hundreds! I still have several hundred left.

Beer and liquor vendors often give bars and restaurants these coasters as free advertisement! Currently we are offering Guiness...lol

With that being said, if you'd like to give this a shot, talk to a friend or family member in the restaurant industry or sweet talk your server, bartender or the manager on duty next time you are out drinking or having a meal with the family. I'd bet they would at least give you a handful of them!

ive noticed that stevo has got more shy at feeding time.. b4 he wued eat with me watching but now if im peeping in he slithers off...

Sometimes I use paper towels as well...
But usually I just put my hatchlings in a deli with the mouse...if they are having a hard time finding it on their own.

Some say it's better to feed outside the viv to eliminate substrate ingestion. LOL, I read that entire thread on the subject not so long ago, made for some interesting reading. Anyway I feed on a flat surface somewhere on a pile of paper towels, usually in the kitchen, my corns have the good manners to eat at the table ;)

I have a kingsnake I feed on a plate in the middle of the living room floor...

Drives my wife crazy...but the kids LOVE it.
