Dog in need of home...

Jenstar

IN OVER MY HEAD ;)
I found the cutest little dog running through the parking lot by a main street at 11pm at night tonight... I might need to find this little guy a home if I can not find the original owners, not that they deserve him. I am guessing he is about a year old poodle/maltese cross. About 25 pounds. Sweetest dog ever. If you live within driving distance from San Diego and you want a dog be sure to let me know. :)

Uhh, why not the shelter? And did he have a collar with tags?

Also, why would the owners not be deserving? What if someone got into their house or backyard and let the dog go out?

Also take him to your local shelter or vets office and have him scanned...he might be chipped.

Definately don't rule out the owners as bad owners. Is the dog in good shape? I would guess someone out there is looking for their pet.

Everytime someone loses their snake on here doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to own their snake anymore.

He had a extendable leash wrapped around his neck as a collar. He had no real collar or tags. I looked all over the area for his owners and found no one. I also ran a craigslist for him that says I found a dog and to email me if you lost one. I'm just running this ad on case I NEED to find him a home.

Jen stated she might need to find it a home, quoted above and bolded. Not that she was trying to do so right now.

Jen, I hope you find the little ones owners. It was nice of you to take the dog in instead of leaving it on the streets. Good luck! :)

Good luck finding the little guy's humans. I hope he can go home!

You might want to check your local laws regarding finding and keeping or rehoming a dog. Here, if you want to do that, you have 2 choices: Turn him into the local animal shelter (after a given amount of days--usually between 3 and 5, if the owners haven't come forward, the dog becomes property of the shelter, and it can be legally adopted or euthanized, at which point the finder usually has first dibs to adopt the dog), or hang onto him for 6 months, using all available methods to actively find his original humans (including, but not limited to, radio, tv, newspaper and Internet ads). You need to keep the proof that you've done this for the entire 6 months. If, after obeying the law, if no one claims the dog, it THEN becomes yours to do with as you please. If you don't follow the law, and the original owner shows up at some later date, you can be held financially and criminally liable.

Your state, county and/or city may not have such strict laws/ordinances in place, but it might be worth it to check on them, in case it takes awhile to find his humans.

Because it's summertime and every shelter across the country, whether its no kill or not, is filled to capacity. Taking a dog to a shelter right now is a death sentence.

Maybe if you were to surrender the dog, but if you take it in there saying you found the lost dog, I believe majority of the shelters have a policy about holding found dogs for a certain period of time before they can do anything with them.

If you have several shelters in your area, contact the local AC &/or PD to find out which one they take found dogs to, so that if the owners are searching for the dog, they can find him/her there.

You're talking to someone who fosters for a no kill and works very closely with the kill shelter. When a dog is turned in they have to hold them for 5 days. Some places it's less, some places its more. After the stray hold is up, if there is no room for the dog, or if they are full, someone dies. Whether it is the new dog, or a dog who's already stayed over their time, a dog gets put to sleep. If a person is really and truly looking for their lost dog, they will check Craigslist and local classified ads. In my town, lost and found ads are free.

I suggest getting him checked for a micro-chip. I wouldn't take him a shelter, that's for sure. Unless it's a no-kill shelter.

I believe that if you find a lost dog or cat, the owners are more often than not irresponsible. A responsible owner makes sure that their animal is kept in a safe area, and contained properly.

Though I do understand that accidents happen, it's usually safe to assume that the owners either let them out on purpose because they're stupid or the dog keeps getting out but they won't fix the problem.

I'm not disagreeing that there areplenty of irresponsible owners out there, but I wouldn't say that it's fair to make that assumption.

There are many ways that pets can escape, even if the owner is a responsible one. Especailly the smarter breeds.

That's like saying that the majority of snake owners who have had a snake escapee are irresponsible owners.

I have ran multiple craiglist ads with no luck so far. I have had people contact me but with the completely wrong breed or discription. I am taking him to get checked for a microchip tomorrow. I will not surrender him to the humane society. I will keep him till his owner comes forward or I find him a good home.
So if you are local and interested let me know. He is super cute and really friendly. Gets along awesome with my other four dogs too.

Here he is... After I brushed him.

Snakes are a different story, those little critters are VERY good at escaping. Better than any cat or god I've ever seen.

Also, SOOOO CUTE!

No luck so far... I've had so many people email me asking if I have their dog. It makes me sad to see so many people missing their puppies. :(

Now, THERE'S a dog I'd take!

If I was in CA. If we didn't already have 10 good dogs.... What a little cutie! Looks like an untrimmed poodle or somesuch, doesn't s/he?

I think that's a poor assumption to make.

In 2008 my dog went missing. My husband and I went on a 4 day vacation and left her in the care of his father. The day before we were supposed to come home she lunged on the leash and broke it. She was missing for 6 days... the worst six days of my life. Does that make me irresponsible? I owned her for 5-6 years at that point and she'd never gotten out of the yard or even gone outside without supervision under my watch and because the leash failed she got lost.

Some circumstances are beyond a person's control, it doesn't make them a bad person or a careless owner. :shrugs:

When my dog was missing I did the following: I posted signs everywhere, dropped them off at Vet offices, left them at the pound (and went to the pound daily to see if they'd picked her up). I didn't check craigslist or use any online tools. I did everything locally...

So I'd suggest making a Found poster and giving a copy of it to all the vets in your area and in the area where you found the dog. I'd give one to the shelters, too. You might even post it around on some telephone poles in the area where you found the dog as well. I think it's great you put something up on cragslist, but what if the dog's owners don't have internet access?

Just some thoughts I had. I never would have found my dog if I hadn't made signs and taken the time to spread them around. Several people called to tell us they had seen her and the day we found her it was because a woman called and told us she had just seen her.

Oh, one last thought. You might also try posting signs at the post office. I found a dog around where I'm living at now (some years ago though) and that's how the owners found me. They'd gone to get their mail and saw the found poster. Also grocery stores and gas stations might be good places to hang found posters.

Good luck, I hope you find the dog's owners. :)

Here's the thing about escaped dogs & cats -- if you have a dog, he or she really needs a tag, a collar & a microchip. That way there's more hope of getting him or her back if he does escape. The leash wrapped around the neck & no tags suggests some degree of carelessness. Dogs get out, it's really hard to prevent 100% of doggie escapes. We had an escape artist dog -- she was like something out of Hogan's Heroes with her tunneling, fence climbing & so on. She had tags (this was the 1970s, no microchips). That way, if someone found her before I did, they could call us.

Cats are somewhat easier to keep indoors in my experience, but if there is any chance they will get out, again, tags & a microchip will help bring them home again safely.

If and when I have a boid, I suspect I will microchip it too, even if it isn't required by law. Improves the animal's chances in case of a disaster.

I have found & returned dogs & cats to their humans over the years -- they all had tags, or a collar, that told me where to call. Seems like that's the minimum a good owner can do.

This is just IMHO & I apologize if I have offended.
