Double clutch

CAV

Dazed and Cornfused
On the very day that the first egg from clutch #1 hatches, I find nine more with Mom. This wasn't planned and she looks horrible. I really hope that she'll pull through. :(

Give Mom lots of TLC, frequent small meals, and she should hopefully get back into condition. Keep a close watch on her and make sure she eats. And don't hesitate to not breed her next year if she takes a long time to recover. I've had to keep a few females out of breeding the following year when they had a rough time from egg laying.

Thanks Susan. She took a hopper yesterday, but didn't move around much afterwards. She had been seperated from the male prior to laying the first clutch, so I thought she was just getting back up to her normal weight. Good thing I just happened to be feeding yesterday and found both her and the eggs in time. :eek1:

How's she doing? I found a THIRD clutch from one of my females this past feeding day! There were only 6 eggs, all slugs, and Mom is still doing great. This is her second year breeding. I only had 1 other female lay a third clutch, my first cornsnake ever, and she was 6 yrs old when she surprised me with that 3rd clutch. She hasn't done it since, but she double clutches every year whether I like it or not.

Susan,

She is doing better but is still thin and week. I offered her two adult mice on Monday night and she ate tem both. I'm going to up her feeding frequency into the fall and try to bulk her back up. Thanks for asking.

Did you survice your tropical visitor? ;).

Unfertilized eggs are called"slugs". Some females will lay slugs without a male.

Well eating's always a good sign, does she take rats? I had a 3yr old male snow corn that was about as thin as a yearling got him onto rats and he's porking out no end now which is always great to see!

Rats seem to put the wieght on corns much faster then mice. I like feeding rats to my recovering females when possible, good advice!

CAV - Thanks for asking. We survived Frances fine, just a few trees/branches down, and only lost what was in the fridge...freezer stuff still OK (I would have hated to lose all my frozen rodents with 75 adult/subadults and as many hatchlings looking for food). We're still boarded up for Ivan, but I don't think anyone but God knows when and where that one is going to hit.

Susan,

Glad all is well with your family. The little thing can always be replaced. :)
