Duxor's 2016 planned pairings

My snakes are still in brumation and won't be out until early April, so this is a little presumptuous, but here goes. I have other possible pairings, but haven't yet made up my mind.

1) Amel het cinder stripe x amel het cinder stripe: These two were hatched by Carol. They have produced 2 peppermint stripes, but sadly they were both the only kinked offspring from this pair. Hoping for perfect peppermint stripes this year!

2) Tessera het lava 66% ph lavender 50% ph amel motley x lava lavender 50% ph amel stripe: I'm really hoping the male's lavender het proves and I produce lava lavender tesseras! And if any of the other possible hets prove, my head will explode.

3) Ultramel lavender motley x sunkissed het lavender: I believe that the sunkissed female is also redcoat, due to her extreme red color and red belly. This pairing is to start an ultramel orchid motley project.

4) Orchid x Redcoat lava ph sunkissed : This pairing is to test the female's possible het for sunkissed, which would be a pleasant surprise. Redcoat lava orchids someday?

If you do get lava lavender tesseras, put me down for a female. :D

Lol, here's hoping! At least if his het doesn't prove (but everything else goes well) I should at least get lava tesseras 100% het lavender. The wait is going to kill me!

Pairings 1 and 2 yielded all slugs, and a third pairing that I didn't post has yielded 5 slugs and no fertiles so far. I would really like to get SOME fertile eggs this year, especially from pairing number 3!

Thanks Nanci, it looks like the redcoat lava is laying slugs, at least that's all I saw when I checked this morning.

I'm indeed worried that I did something wrong. But my racks are in the basement, so the front of the cage is probably only 71 degrees and the back is maybe 80-82 (at least the last time I measured temps). Next year I will probably bring the ones I am breeding upstairs so they can get natural light, and keep the males in a rack kept at 75.

I have gone to keeping my males at 78-80 in the warm end. I don't think your temps for the males sound too hot.

I guess it could be really bad luck. Although I've heard worse this season, I know someone that has been breeding corns successfully for over a decade, and this year she had 8 females lay slugs and DIE. So I am grateful that the ones that have finished laying slugs have gotten all the slugs out and resumed eating.

Counting on the sunkissed het lavender girl now, she went through her prenatal shed after all the others, and just shed yesterday. Maybe she is trying to stand out and give me a big, beautiful clutch.

The unlisted pairing was tessera het lava 66% ph lavender 50% ph amel motley X lavender het amel. I thought she slugged out when I saw several slugs scattered throughout her enclosure, but I could feel more eggs. She dropped a fertile one outside her lay box but is currently laying inside the box, I could see two slugs and another fertile. This is the same male I crossed to the lava lavender. Now I'm really confused! But happy, too!

My vet says with infertility in snakes, it's usually the female at fault. And it's "normal" if there's a mixed fertility clutch for the female to drop a few slugs before settling in to laying the fertile clutch.

I got 4 good-looking eggs, I'm praying that they hatch! Maybe I'll get a lavender, proving the male's possible het.

She's the only one I didn't brumate!

I hate brumating. I feel like it's an unnecessary risk. It's sure not necessary for fertility. Might help a little getting everyone on the same schedule, but I've never had a problem with that. You get a little break from feeding, but make up for it with constantly having to check for spilled water bowls...I don't like it.

I don't think I am going to do it next year. With less than 10 pairings a year, it does not save me much time as you accurately point out, and not much money either. Luckily I had no spilled water bowls the entire time!

Pairing 3 has given me 23 eggs that are overtly fertile. I can't see any veins but the egg shells are unusually thick. I really hope they develop!!!

I wonder what was up with my other females (or males?) this year?

Edit: I can see veins in some of them! I'll check them out again in a few days.

I can also see huge veins in 2 of the 4 eggs from the tessera het lava 66% ph lavender 50% ph amel motley X lavender het amel pairing. I believe the other 2 are duds. Can't wait to see what's inside! A lavender morph, pretty pretty please!

From the 2 eggs in the clutch above, I got a tessera......and an opal!!!

That means Ziggy is actually a tessera het amel lava lavender 50% ph motley! Only 2 eggs and I proved two possible hets, something good has come out of this year!

The eggs from the sunkissed het lavender female are due to hatch in a few days. She was paired once to an orchid, and multiple times to an ultramel lavender motley, which I hope is the father.

That's great!
Sorry to hear about the bum year. I think Murphy was a jerk this year. I had four pairings, only one produced eggs.

I cannot wait to see pics! :)
