Dying corns in the big chain store - ???

The local store I went into today to get some supplies had 4 mixed corns in their cage. 2 snows - 1 looking really dehydrated, 2 - albinos - 1 possibly dead and what appeared to be mites on them all.

No manager could be found and the "kid" working their didn't want to bother their boss at home.

Any suggestions how I can get this store checked out and the animals cared for? What groups could I report them to without starting the whole mess of "snakes & exotic" animals in the pet trade? It was really appalling the conditions.

I would really like to the managers & their store vet have it. :madeuce:

Since it is a chain store you have the ability to go over managements head. I would contact the main offices and let them know not only what is going on but that you intend to notify the local health dept(pet stores need licensing from them) and ASPCA. You won't have to come down on them LOL. But make sure you contact the other agencies at the same time.
That is what I would do anyway...

If it's one of the big chains (Petsmart, Petco, Petland) there are generally small-but-findable signs posted, giving out an animal care hotline number. PLEASE call it if you see something wrong in one of these stores and the management is unresponsive--those managers are paid to make sure the animals are healthy and the customers are happy, and obviously if you're seeing sick snakes, they're not doing their jobs.

If it's a locally-owned store, there is less recourse, but you can call or visit repeatedly and try to contact some member of management, to let them know what's going on with their snakes. Additionally, or if telling the managers doesn't get results, you could call Animal Control for your area--if they don't govern pet store conditions, ask them to refer you to whoever does, and ask them what you can do to make sure the snakes are taken care of.

Use caution when dealing with any animal organization (SPCA, ASPCA, etc.). Do a bit of research BEFORE contacting them about their stance on keeping exotics. Many animal shelters are supporting the ban on exotics (yes, that includes cornsnakes!), and you would only be adding fuel to the fire.
