Earth Substrate

Scrub

Woops... LOL
I am planning to get a corn snake soon, and i have done all of the basic research, and have ordered Bill and Kathy Love's new book, but it has not arrived yet. I was wondering if it is alright to use earth from a garden centre as a substrate, as I am planning to put live plants in with the snake.
Also, if I do use this, will I need to feed it in a separate container?
Thanks,
Chris

You shouldn't use "earth" from a garden center because most of them contain fertilizers or pesticides that could harm your snake. If you want to use a natural type substrate, you could use EcoEarth or Bed-a-Beast. You can get them in the reptile section of a pet store. They are blocks of compressed coconut fiber. Put it in a 5 gallon bucket with a gallon of water and they expand enough to fill your viv up. You should be able to make a nice natural looking viv setup with this substrate and it won't harm your corn. Be careful with live plants though because they have to be very hardy and strong to withstand a corn crawling over it all the time. Definitely feed in a separate container.
