eating starting at the rear

I do not know if this is a problem but when I feed my 7 month old corn snake a frozen/thawed pinkie he has all but one time started at the rear instead of the head which I thought was the normal way for a snake to eat prey.

Indeed "butt munching" isn't unusual :)

The first one I had (wild snake) would always grab from the side, but would ALWAYS work the mouse around to the head and eat it from that end.

The one I have now (captive raised), is just the opposite. She has eaten three times now, and will always grap from the side, but work the mouse into position to eat from the back.

My son (7yrs old) thinks this is just HYSTERICAL when they "butt munch". Potty humor is very popular at this age. Our snake does it on occassion too.

The way a snake determines which end of the mouse is the head is by poking at the mouse to find the hard skull and feeling the direction of hair growth. This is how they nearly always manage to start at the head. Pinks have mushy little skulls and no hair- so the snake just starts at the most convenient place!

Yea, my king ate from the rear a couple times while on pinks but hasn't done it since she moved to fuzzies. My friend's snake still regularly takes the mouse backwards though and she's been on adult mice for years. Some snakes just don't seem to care.

My amel is a dedicated butt-muncher. No matter where she grabs the prey, she always starts swallowing the rear end first. My others normally go for the head. Different strokes for different snakes, I suppose.
