Eek! Found Mites

I found some of the little black mites on our little one this morning. Working to take out the substrate, bleach the tank, put down paper towels, and use the Nix solution that is posted on here. Any other recommendations?

I'd be REALLY REALLY careful using Nix on a baby. I would avoid it if at all possible. You can mix it up at half strength and spray the enclosure, and I'd do that three times, two weeks apart, but I'd try to get the mites off using some other method, with a baby. It is highly toxic and easy to overdose a little one.

What about a couple of soaks a day in water.....clorox the viv and use paper towels instead of aspen for the time being?

I don't think Chlorox will do anything. I'd do a half-strength Nix solution- spray the viv, let it dry completely, and I'd use paper towels. If you search, you can find other methods of removing mites from babies. Provent-A-Mite (PAM) is used with great success, but again, it has the same ingredient as Nix, so I'd be cautious spraying that directly on a baby. I think there's a Mite Relief spray you can buy at a pet store that is non-toxic, or you can just soak in room temp water with mild dish soap.

Thanks.. I will probably just use the water method with some mild dish soap. Is the blue dawn(that I personally know from my wife who is a dog groomer is safe on dogs and kills fleas) one that should be acceptable for corns?

Also, I checked out my other corn(in another viv, but in the same room) and she was good and clear. My beardie is in the other room, so I think he will be okay(if they can get the same mites that is).

I'd treat everyone's enclosure. Dawn should be safe for snakes. You don't need a lot- just enough to break the surface tension.

There is mite off. That is what I used. You can spray the paper towels with it and then put in a tupperware and use those when changing the ones in the viv. You can also use a bit of veggie oil and rub down the snake. It suffocates the mites, then bathe the little guy afterwards. I also sprayed the mite off on my hands then rubbed down our snake after his bath.

I would also put vaseline around the top of each viv on the inside and out. The mites can not pass through it.

The life cycle of the mite is about 2 weeks I believe. The eggs are the things that seem to survive and then hatch later when you think you have already gotten rid of them.

For what is worth .. I have treated neonates and very young with 1/2 strength .. wipe down young and spray habitat and full strength on adults (use the dilution on here) and never have had a problem. Had mites twice .. both sent with snakes mailed to me and were new ... so use quarantine whenver you get new critters and care for them last. Also,do as mentioned above and apply vaseline as it will stop those who try to move elsewhere.

I use Poultry Protector spray from Manna Pro, never had snake mites but it worked on my mice and pinkies for their mites. Snakes ate the mice, used it on a snake in a panic. Point is, it has been safe for me. No ill effects for any of my animals, no harsh fumes or anything either. It's all natural.
