Egg Laying Boxes what do you use

Ok I have tried to search the forum and keep coming up with every thing except what I am looking for :(

I am trying to find out what everyone uses for egg boxes.

Here is my problem. Years ago when I was breeding, shoe boxes fit nicely into blanket boxes. Well last year when I tried this I could not find any shoe boxes short enough to fit (leaving space for the female to get in through a hole in the top) into my blanket boxes. Fortunately, I was only breeding 1 female and I just put her into a large storage tub. Well, this year we have more then the 1 female we will be breeding, next year we'll have even more, and we don't have the room to put them all into storage tubs from their pre-lay shed till they lay.

Thanks,
~Jeff C.

I use Rubbermaid Take Alongs. I can't remember the size they are, but recall they come in a package of two, and are approximately 3" (?) deep by 12" long (?) and 6" wide (?). They're in my classroom at school, so don't have them handy to actually measure. Couldn't find the exact ones online, but here's a link to what the packaging looks like. I believe I was able to get them at WalMart and Target. Also Menards I believe.

Thanks Drizzt,

I use the Zip Lock version to house my yearlings. I thought about using them for my egg boxes as well but they just seem so small for my females (some over 500gr) to fit in let alone lay eggs LOL.

They seem to work just right for my girls. They feel nice and cozy in there! I also use sphagnum moss as opposed to vermiculite, etc.

I bought a couple of these last year at Walmart in my never ending scouring of the plastic aisle at Walmart.

A Sterilite Fun Box. Comes in two sizes, large and small. I used the small for my egg laying boxes, and they worked beautifully. The large looks like it'd hold 2-3 gallons of water. Which I used for toting veggies out of the garden with sans lid, of course.

They're nice and deep for their size, which my females seem to prefer over shallower and flatter boxes. And best of all, they come with a hole in the lid, no need to make one. =P

Although depending on what sort of laying material you use, I did have to put pieces of packing tape on both sides of the holes for the handles to keep the Bed-a-Beast in with this particular female. But other than that, I didn't need to worry about it.

You could also fill you shoe boxes completely full of nesting material and cut a hole in the side of the box, near the top. :)

I'm glad I looked at this thread. Last year I used a large Kritter Keeper and it was so hard to keep the moss moist. I'm going to use something a little smaller and less ventilated. And she's in her pre-lay shed now!! Yea!

I use nine inch deli cups filled 1/2 to 2/3 full of vermiculite. I cut a hole in the lid off to the side. They like the cozy feel to them and the egg masses come out the right size for incubation (in 9 inch delis). I like that I can look in and see anything I want without opening the box and disturbing mama. :D
