Eggs Vs Live

This may be a dumb question but I am curious, Isn't there some snakes that gives live birth instead of laying eggs? If this is true what designates which ones give live birth?

Yes there are. Rattle snakes give live birth and I believe garters do too, there are more but im not sure what ones they are. Im guessing its just the species that designates it.

Well, yes some snakes give "live" birth, but it's really all an illusion. Those snakes are what are called ovoviviparious, meaning that they develop eggs in their bodies, but the eggs actually hatch inside the mom. The baby snakes are not nourished by the mother through an umbilical cord like we see in true live birth, but rather they feed off the nutrients from the eggs.

Garter snakes, water snakes, rattlesnakes, anacondas and all the various boa species I've looked into, around 8, so I'm assuming all boas are live bearers but could be wrong. Those are all I can think of off the top of my head. And Alicat is right about how it works, not truly a 'live' birth like mammals have.

Thanks Mike, I'd wondered about the Boas, do you know which are egg layers? Are all pythons egg layers? They are another that I'd wondered about, every species I've looked into are egg laying, so I've been assuming all pythons are egg layers but don't really know on that one either.

The calabar the arabian sand boa and west african sand boa all erycines
AFAIK... I'm not really into them... I like Carpets..

Erycines are all live birth... Unless you count the Calabar burrowing python as an erycine, which from what little I've read seems to be in debate. They're egg layers (hence the "python" name, I would guess).

I don't know any live birth species beyond the ones that've already been mentioned here. :)

It was only thought to be a python because of the eggs... The other two lay eggs as well... So 3 Boas lay eggs.... Check it out....

That is very cool, I wasn't aware of that. So, the Calabar, E. jayakari... And what's the 3rd? Rosies and Rubber boas are live-bearers, and I'm pretty sure so are the rest of the Sand boas (the page you linked specifies that jayakari is the only known sand boa to lay eggs)...
