Yes, a 40 long (36 X 18) can adequately house an adult corn, but would a 4 ft. cage be more comfortable, or just stressful? I want to buy a cage that will make the snake the most comfortable.

I know that young snakes may feel insecure in a large cage. At what age/size would it be OK to move a corn into a 3 or 4 foot cage?

Thanks for the endless advice!

Tough question.
Really depends on the snake, Here's a scenario.............
Got a Creamsicle hatchling last year and put him in a 5.5 gal tank to start.
He just tore it apart, moving the hides, piling the substate in a corner etc.(named him Chaos). Anyway a friend gave me a 20 gal tall which is 2' long So I put him in there.
Wow! what a difference that made, he totally chilled out starting using the hides, left the substarte alone, just really seemed happy. He is now about 30" long and beefy and is still in the same tank and seems quite content. So I guess my point is let the snake tell you when he needs a bigger tank.
By the way, I plan on keeping him in this same tank, unless I see a drastic change in his behavior.

Hope this story was of some help

I started all of my hatchlings out in large enclosures, and have not experienced any problems (yet  )

I think that it's important to provide several cozy hides so the snake feels comfortable. I also have climbing branches in with all three. Even the shyest one settled into his tank fairly quickly. Except for the 48 hours after a feed, they all spend most of their time perched on the branches in the evening.

Based on what I've read here, it seems that, if anything, my snakes are more relaxed in the roomy cages.

Hope this helps,
Scott

I started mine in 10 gl. and moved up to 30. My new hatchlings are in sterilite containers right now that are like 5 gl. tanks, but they are really small right now. When they get larger I'll be moving them into bigger ones.

I have one of my guys in a 20 gal Long and one in a 29 gal. Both seem very happy. They bounce from side to side and I often find them purched on the climbing vines under/on top of the silk plants. One is 20 inches and the other is 22 inches long. Even though this is adequate space I plan on moving them to bigger tanks in a year or so. Will probably go with the 40 gal breeder critter keeper tank. Its has a larger floor space then some fish tanks. they tend to be slimmer.
