hi. i have a good idea of how i want to setup my enclosure, but i may need a lil help. :)
ok ...
its a 50 gal long plastic walmart container. i am going to use aspen for substrate 2 hides one on each end, a lrg shallow water bowl..

should i put a lrg rock and some vines or wood for him to climb on??
i dont have the snake yet but i want to get the enclosure set up before i get him.

Does anyone have a pic of their cornsnake enclosure?? ( hahaa i'll just cheat and copy yaws setups! :p .. nah, j/k.)

I dont have anything fancy now, just a rock, tree type climbing branch, hideing rock, heat lamp, and some moss on the bottom.. When i get the new 6x2x2 cage for her, im gonna do some stuff like vines, plants, ect
 
I'd definitely put something in there for the snake to climb. They really like climbing. I've used the plastic vines with suction cups for small snakes, and branches or habba trees for larger ones. The plastic vines won't support the weight of an adult snake, but are great for smaller ones.
 
Here is my set up.....

Nothinh special but ok i guess ....... The back ground is home made and every thing else in there is found by my house (or woods) or made at home. I have it a lil different now and i made him a new hide (or going to make one) with a clay pot. The thing you see with a nob is a thermostat which is used for a hot tube but my dad and i adapted it for Blaze

The single most important thing...

After your corn escapes, you will simply have a very pretty, but empty, terrarium. Read back and see how many people have escapes. This is a lot more likely to happen with a bigger enclosure, because they are usually not built as "tight" as smaller ones.

I cannot stress this point enough. Make sure it is absolutely escape-proof.

Be aware that your little corn will be able to climb up glass, or other smooth surfaces and get about half an inch shy of his entire length! All it takes is getting its chin over a ledge and it can pull up its entire body.

Also, know that their heads and entire bodies can squish and flatten to get through very small cracks. A hatchling corn is a little thinner than a pencil. They can fit through a crack (between the tank and the lid) that is only half that wide.

For example, I had a 4+ foot ball python, as thick as my bicep, and her favorite "hide" was jammed between her 'hide box' and the wall... in a crevice 1/3rd as thick as her body! Between that and eating, they will amaze you with what their bodies can do. :)

I've been keeping corns for over 4 years now, and I've had a CalKing since 95. Of these 15, I have had zero escapes over the years. It just takes foresight, and making sure you don't underestimate your opponent. :)

I know what your saying, but why would a bigger cage be built looser then small ones? Mine will be just like any of my other cages, if not better...

maybe you werent talking to me
 
Bigger cages just have more flexability in their lids... because there so long its easier to make a crack in it... I keep my big snakes in 20gal. and 30gal. but I keep my small corns that are like 1 year and younger in a 10 gallon... less flexability in lids and that gives it a tighter fit.
 
Bigger Enclosures = More weak spots.

All enclosures (providing theyre opened from the top and are square) have 4 corners. The larger the box the more distance between these cornes. For the most part enclosures (shoeboxes, sweaterboxes even glass aquaria) are secured on the short ends. So the larger the enclosure the weaker the long ends are going to be in the middle.

In short, The larger the enclosure, The more weak points there will be.

Yeah, Kevin pretty much summed up my thoughts on that.

Also, I was directing my comments at the person who started this thread, but it's always an important point to make when discussing housing. :)
 
mine is going to have sliding, and locking doors.. not sure about that, seems like it would be safer yet not because it might not lock or something, guess ill just have to be carefull ;)
