eucalyptus and shells in vivarium??

Hello,
I am a new cornsnake owner and I hate the way fake plants look- I bought some dried eucalyptus and an abalone shell to decorate my snake, Burma's, vivarium with. Will the soft scent of the eucapytus bother her? Are shells ok for snakes to be around? Thank You.

I wouldn't put the eucalyptus in with her. In an enclosed space the oils could be very irritating to her lungs. The abalone shell should be fine. I bet she'll love it for shedding her skin on.

If you don't like fake plants, there are a few kinds of real ones that are safe. Look into some of the succulents, like Jade plants, hen and chicks, and christmas cactus. They are really hardy, attractive, non toxic, and fun to climb on. If you buy some from a store or nursery, make sure the plants haven't been sprayed with pesticides or fertilized with chemicals.

I love the smell of eucalyptus, but I doubt your snake will. The odor will probably irritate it and may even make it sick. I would skip anything with a strong odor just to be on the safe side.

Good Luck!

I agree...I would stay away from the Eucalyptus. It causes dermatitis(not sure about snakes) but its very oily and harmful if swallowed. It would not be worth the risk IMO.
