2 questions

1: Are there any european or northern snakes that can be kept, and maybe not need heaters?

2: Anyone know a good Garter snake breeder in uk?

cheers people

Lampy,
All snakes to some degree need heating. Heating helps their digestion of food. Most temperate snakes need to be kept at a minimum of 75 degrees to help digesting their food.

Some snakes that are said to have lower heat requirements are:

Russian ratsnake
Rubber boa
black milksnake
solomon island ground boa

And as stated above, just because they can tolerate cold well, doesn't mean they necessarily like it. Believe me, I've been searching for one that needs no heat too.

Yeah hohum, was just wondering as British adders and grass snakes seem to do ok in our climate.

Leopard rat snakes (situla) IMO are the nicest European rats and DON'T need extra heat. They sit quite happily at 75 - 80 degrees. However they are quite expensive...
