Lurking around the corner
One of my friends made a facebook group about this, encouraging every one to sign the petition. I was completely and utterly appalled and disgusted at this man's actions; I signed immediately, and decided that it is important to share this with as many people as possible. We have to stop him from doing it again.

Here's the story:
In 2007, the 'artist' Guillermo Vargas Habacuc, took a dog from the street, tied him to a rope in an art gallery and began starving him to death.

For several days, the 'artist' and the visitors of the exhibition watched, emotionless, the shameful 'masterpiece' based on the dog's agony, until eventually he died.

Does THIS sound like art to you?

But this is not all... the prestigious Visual Arts Biennial of Central America decided that the 'installation' WAS actually art, so Guillermo Vargas Habacuc has been invited to repeat his cruel action for the Biennial of 2008.

Let's STOP HIM!!!!!

Internet Petitions are a joke. Seriously Internet petitions do not do anything so why waste your time. Bah, I have no time to even give this any attention.

Of course, it is always hard to determine whether things like that are really true, and even snopes isn't sure. I went ahead and signed that petition, along with 1.4 million others (that part IS true).

Even if the details were misconstrued in the media, don't you think a petition with that many signatures would make an impact? Maybe enough to establish more solid laws against animal cruelty? That's really what my goal is. I'm not trying to spam the boards with fake messages.

Thank you all for reading and giving any input.

I'm sorry for triple posting, but I can't edit... I don't have any money to contribute to the site.

I just wanted to say that, whether or not that story/petition is fake or pointless, animal cruelty is still a real problem in many places. I wasn't trying to spam or clutter up the boards with nonsense.... I was just trying to express the fact that something really needs to be done to protect animals from abuse.

I admit that I should have done more research before posting about the petition, and I wish that I did because now I feel like an idiot.

When I posted the snopes article, I wasn't at all trying to make you feel bad. I was just giving you more info. It's really hard to prove whether this is actually true or just a marketing ploy by the gallery. Your compassion for animal cruelty is nothing to feel bad about. Unfortunately, like trixterpup mentioned, it doesn't really seem that online petitions do anything other than clog up people's inboxes. I've personally (but this doesn't mean it's true) never heard of an online petition doing anything other than bringing things to people's attention, but it doesn't seem to solve the problem.

Again, I didn't mean to make you feel bad. I hope you never become cynical to the point that things like this become so common place that they mean nothing to you.

This is a great thread because not only does it show that people do care enough to feel outraged, how many care enough to know the facts? I was invited to that facebook group long ago by friends who were flipping out about what that guy did.

My time on the internet has shown me you take absolutely nothing at face value.

When I linked them the wiki article and it's sources about what actually happened, there was a general 'oh' but nothing else. At this point it seems like they'll be outraged than an artist may torture a dog, but there's no outrage when an innocent man is branded and metaphorically lynched by the mob.

Frootloop, I'm not rebuking you and the internet is great tool for information and communication, but remember that anyone can post anything and the only people responsible for keeping us informed is ourselves.

Internet is about 98% crap and lies and the other 2 % is truth and facts.

Yeah, I realize that most things on the internet are BS... I was just impulsive about posting that because it upset me so much. I didn't take the time to think about doing research on the topic before posting.

Your heart is in the right place, although I agree that there is so much crap out there, and internet petitions don't solve the problem that they ask you to sign for.

It is appalling if this happened as described; however, WSPA and the HSUS have stated that they have received conflicting reports.

Please don't feel like an idiot for voicing your compassion for animals. I was also disgusted when I first heard about this.

Kathy
