I was at my local PetCo today to pick up the various food items and such for the non-humans in the house and stopped by the reptile displays as I always do while I was there.

The store recently got some new hatchlings in and there was a cute little Anery taking a swim in her bowl as I passed by. I watched for a second and then noticed that her bowl looked like it had been peppered. Oh no! I looked at the other snakes in her viv and one poor little guy was COVERED in mites.

I felt SO bad for the tiny little hatchlings. They looked miserable. I noticed that the ball python babies had mites all over them too. Terrible, terrible, terrible!

I told the store associates before I left (I made sure to do it while there were other customers around- this seems to get the employees to take one seriously and NOT blow you off). They said that they were attempting to resolve the situation, but I have my doubts. I was shocked to see mites on the animals they have on display/for sale. I hope no one buys one until the problem is taken care of!

BTW, if you're in the NW Houston area, the store I'm talking about is on Spring Cypress and SH 249. I've never seen mites on their animals before. I like the staff there in general (I've been going there since the store opened several years ago) and the store is much cleaner than some others I've been to. Truly disappointing to see those babies so afflicted. :(

Just needed to get that out. :(

Wow, that's pretty bad. They really should be quarantined while they're "trying to take care of the problem". Truly amazing that they would be on the sales floor, especially so obvious a condition. Poor snakes, now all of their reptile display probably has them.

Ironically a friend of mine texted me today about his girlfriend wanting a cornsnake after seeing the babies at the same PetCo. I told them to not purchase one from there because of the problem I saw yesterday. My friend said "gee, I thought they looked weird... like they had fleas or something..." After explaining to him what was going on in that situation (and then calming him down after he freaked out because his RTB was purchased there over 2 years ago), he was glad he didn't let his GF convince him to get one from there.

I asked him about the RTB display they had (those animals did not yet appear to be afflicted when I was there) and he said one of the smaller baby RTB's was soaking in a bowl with black specks. Those little buggers sure do seem to be spreading pretty well in a "resolving" situation.

:headbang: Grrrr...

Also, Agent, if you read this reply, I really like the quote in your sig from the Marquis de Sade. He was a strange but fascinating man.

That is awful. I just recently stopped working at Petco, and our animals where very well taken care of. If we found that our snakes had mites (which did happen a few times-once due to the aspen bedding we were using...), they would always be pulled to the back for their treatment. They would NEVER be left on the sales floor...That is just dumb...

Thank you Mynee, I have found him to be a particularly fascinating historical figure ever since first learning of him, early to mid 90's. The great thing about out of the norm. writers is that you're bound to come across a quote, or seven, that you fall in love with.
