Exo-Terra Terrarium Rock Background--Opinions Wanted

I want to upgrade my snakes to a bigger viv sometime in the next year. I'm leaning towards the Exo-Terra 36x18x18. It comes with a "rock" background, which I think is cool because it looks nice and it gives the snakes something to attempt to climb. Here's my concern. As you know, our beloved serpents can squeeze into some pretty small spaces, and I'm worried they might get their heads stuck trying to squeeze into the space beneath the background. What size snake would you feel safe housing in this viv with the background included? My snakes will all be 4 feet or more by the time I upgrade them. Do you think it's okay?

I'd love anyone's opinion, but especially hope to hear from Exo-Terra owners. Thanks!

I've used Exo Terras for years. The background is light styrofoam, I don't see getting "stuck" as even possible. If it's a small snake, you WILL find them tucked up behind it, though! There are two notches cut out of the styro (I think for electric cords, etc.), if you position that side down, until the 100 gram point or so, they can travel in and out at will. If you are waiting until 4 feet, it should be no concern at all. Worst case, they try to get behind it and push it over. For what it's worth the backgrounds are pretty smooth and not easy climbing for snakes.

An fyi on those snake backgrounds. I had one for my bd. When the heat lamp was over it. It started smoking and smelly fumes came out. Make sure its not near a heat source .

I would avoid a heat lamp for snakes altogether. Even wide open, a heat pad surely won't get over 120 or so! I don't know the melting/smoldering point of styrofoam, but it's waaaay beyond that.

Thanks for the responses; I appreciate it. I use UTHs controlled by thermostats, so I don't think that will be a problem.

I use it for my adults and a 6 ft Dumerils boa, none of them pay it any mind. I just like it for the look and to help my animals feel secure. I suppose it may also help hold in heat for my boa.

I have another question for you guys. You know how snakes often poop on the edges/corners of their tanks. Well, I'm wondering how easy it would be to keep the background clean if poop got on it. It looks like it's porous. I'm assuming it comes down all the way to the bottom of the tank. Have you had any problems with this? Thanks.

I have day geckos that poop on them all the time. They aren't hard to clean. Maybe over time that will change, but almost 2 years in, no problems.
