I have been using a mulch substrate called jungle earth. It's a little more expensive than aspen but I like the darker color. I see that lots of people use aspen though. Is aspen better for any certain reasons or is it more of a preference?

Aspen is better as it is dryer and corns don't like humid conditions. This also applies to coconut bark. Newspaper works but doesn't look great. Aspen is great but my personal preference is wood chips but either works well.

I prefer newspaper, its cheap and easy to clean, kinda ugly to look at though, it also makes finding spem plugs easier.

I've used Eco Earth in my snakes' tanks and they do just fine on it. It will be dry enough if you let it dry before putting it in there. Most people seem to prefer aspen because it is relatively cheap, easy to clean, and meshes together creating tunnels for the snake to burrow inot. One thing with the Eco Earth is that while they could burrow, the tunnels they created would collapse as soon as they got out of it, much like dirt would I expect...

I'm a beginner myself, using aspen, everyone recommends newspaper due to its cheapness adn ease of cleaning, just wondering if the inks in the newspaper might be harmful?

no, I have never had a problem or heard of anyone having a problem, although I have milk that likes to spill his water dish and if it sits to long, the ink dose bleed out, but I have never personaly experinced any skin or shed problem using newpaper, I also know my local vet uses newspaper on any snakes they get that have skin problems.

good to know, thanks a lot.

Aspen is by far the best in my opinion. Its cheap and it works well. You have to be careful with bark and make sure that they are baked chips though.

I used aspen, but now I use stuff called 'Aubiose', also used for stables. It is made of the soft core of hennep plants and does have a very nice, kind of sweet odor, whilst absorbing the smell of poo VERY well. See bedding on pic of baby.

I voted for newspaper but actually use Disposable Cage Liners. I buy them by the 1000 and they will usually last me a year or more. I like them better than newspaper because they are pre cut and fit perfectly in the tub. Plus I am lazy and like things easy :shrugs:

I would vote for Sani-Chips as well but there's no option. I do however use Aspen for my boas. Sani-Chips would probably require a big bag while aspen fills up a lot more space.
