Feeding and sexing?

I just got my first corn! It is about 6 weeks old(thats what the pet store said) and i was wondering if i should feed it alive or prekilled pinkies? And is probing the only way to sex them?

Congrats on the new snake!!

I would suggest that feeding prekilled mice is much better than feeding live, serveral reasons:
1) it's cheaper
2) dead mice doesn't smell as bad as live ones...
3) saver for the snake since it doesn't have to take the risk of getting hurt by the mouse (when feeding hoppers or adult mice)

more reasons if you want....

Probing is one of the ways to determine if the snake is a male or female. Poping is another. But both of these methods should only be done by experienced breeders or vets. Since both of these says COULD damage the snake.....and it might not be able to reproduce later on. So if you don't know how to use either one of the methods, please do not try it yourself unless you are shown how to do it by an experienced herper or vet.

Good Luck and Happy Herping!!

Counting the scales

If you want to determine the sex of your snake - you could count the scales from a shed skin. This is completely safe and easy.

OKay, the pic below isn't entirely correct, but you can get the idea ... cound the scales on the bottom of the snake from the vent to the tip of the tail. There should be two rows of them.

130 scales or less - probably female
130-140 scales - hard to tell
Over 140 scales - probably male

This method is only a guideline, and should not be used if you are planning on breeding or selling snakes, or housing two together - but it's a good guide!

U can do it on your snake - if you can get it to keep still :p
