Feeding Opinion

Just wanted to get a few opinions or should I say Pro's or Con's on the subject of to feed or not to feed in his cage.

We have fed our baby his first 2 times in his cage for the reason of not wanting to stress him out until he gets used to his new home...is it ok to keep feeding him in the cage or should we start feeding him outside of his cage...thanks for any suggestions

I feed my baby corn in a brown paper page, it works for us. Check the Search section , there should be lots of info on this. :)

Sorry reread your post, From what I read it is better to feed outside of viv because your corn might think evertime you put your hand in it's "Dinner Time" snap snap. :) Good luck

Normally, I feed in a separate container. I have been known to be lazy, and just hand feed them in the viv. I have no reason to believe that feeding in the viv is bad, but it's risky as accidental substrate ingestion is a possibility.
All of my 10 corns "know" me and never offer to bite no matter why I'm in their viv. I have kept many species of snakes over the years, and I can honestly say that corns are by far the most forgiving, docile creatures I have ever cared for. Just my .02

I feed inside the viv (tub) as it cuts down on time spent feeding multiple snakes. I have very limited time these days, so time spennt in transit from feeding container to cage (which really does add upbecause tubs in my rack have lids , really as up. I figure that the aggresiveness we see due to inapropriate feeding responses would be no more than the aggressiveness that is due to a snake that doesn't get handled enough.

not until i get bit lol! i always feed inside the cage but i feed my animals every 4-5 days so im not too worried about getting bit, withmy other snakes its too hard to feed outside the tank (taiwanese beauty) good luck getting that to be still enough to eat or for that matter put in another container!i have to just drop the ft in and he always eats it.

I've fed in the viv on paper and never been bitten because I also handle my snakes at other times then feeding. If the only time you opened the viv was to feed, I'd imagine that this would soon trigger a feeding response. However, if in between feedings you're cleaning out the viv, changing water, and getting the snakes out and handling them, it shouldn't be a problem. Just don't feed them straight on the substrate.

What we have been doing is laying a folded piece of paper in his cage and I have been dropping the pinky onto the paper while he is still "hiding" as not to have him see where the pinky has come from...we do handle him other times rather just for feeding (Handling, cleaning, changing water, etc.) Maybe next week I'll try him in a separate container and see how he reacts. Thanks

feeding

If I feed my snake in a seperate container will moving him back into his viv straight after feeding him distress him? For this reason is it better to feed him inside the viv (I handle him regularly apart from feeding him).

I usually take Legoless out to "visit" for awhile before feeding. Then, when the pinkies are thawed and ready I put them into a container (big Gladware containter), put the container in the viv, and then add the snake back to the container. When he's happily snuggled in his warm hide, I lift the container out and all is well. I usually have the top off the viv the whole time, so I'm nearby keeping an eye on the action. Legoless isn't the least but shy though!

I feed my snake in a separate container. She often strikes at the food before she is completely in and feeds with her head in the container and the rest of her body around my sons wrist! Don't think they get that stressed out once they are used to you. Mind you, when we got her the breeder said she was a good feeder and he didn't think we would have a problem. We always give her two fuzzies and after she has finished, just put the container gently back in her viv and let her slide out when she is ready. Hasn't been a problem for us (so far!) lol

She is handled daily, except after feeding, and seems really relaxed. Whatever suits you will suit her I am sure.

Good luck

With the first snake I got I feed him in his cage, and still do. All my adults I feed in their vivs. All the babies I feed in tupaware, because they are all together I dont want to risk anything.

Thankyou for the advice :) I fed my snake for the first time on monday. I took him out and handled him for a bit then put him in a container with the food. When he finished eating I put the contatiner in the viv and let him make his way back to his hide. Everything fine so far :crazy02:
