See this is a popular topic. Not sure if I'm using the appropriate thread forum ?
have read other threads & FAQ, unfortunately all issues are slightly different.

Anyway as 7 people are viewing here, I'll ask here -

Got my first feed tomorrow.

I was told he's on fuzzies but only have pinkies in the freezer.

Do I go to shop for a fuzzie or will two pinkies do ?

Pinkies I can defrost in a bag under running water ?

How do I offer the pinkies - on paper towel or with tweezers and a wiggle ?

in cage or out ? if out when do I put him back ?

How long after can we handle him - 24 hrs ??

Many thanks

Apprehensive

Kevin

if they stated that he's on fuzy's then you should go get fuzy's. It's important to feed the appropriate food size.

I heat up some water in the microwave (like I do for tea, just a minute or two) put fuzy in bag & drop bag in water.
10 minutes later you have yourself a defrosted fuzy.

I just drop the mouse in the deli cup, put in snake, put on lid of deli & leave alone for 10 minutes. They will usually just chow down.

OK I didn't see this part...

FIRST! GET the Cornsnake Manual by Kathy Love. It's indispensable :D

Second, Feed out of cage in a deli cup.

Third, DO NOT handle him for AT LEAST 2 days after feeding. If you handle to early the snake could possibly regurge.

Zing has not taken the fuzzy and after waving it at him doesn't seem interested !

He's back in the cup with fuzzy on top of him - how long should I give him in the cup - over night ??

any other suggestions

:eek1:

Leave him in overnight in a dark, quiet place without disturbing him. I have some that I swear will only eat at 4 am.

Zing didn't take the fuzzy last night.

is he stressed (too much handling new environment) ?

What should I do ?

I left fuzzy in Viv on a plastic tray - not optimistic that he'll come & take it.

How long will the fuzzy last before I have to remove it ?

do I wait a few days and try again ?

do I drop down a size to a pinkie ?

Sorry to be boring to you experienced guys and seeing this post repeated on a regular basis.

Kevin

First- How long have you had him before you attempted to feed him, and have you left him alone or have you been handling him?

Second- Throw the fuzzy away after it's been left overnight.

Whatever feeding schedule he's been on, (every 5 days or every 7 days) wait that many days WITHOUT handling him and try again with another fuzzy.
Try puting the plastic tray in front of where he's hiding, turn out the lights, and leave the room. Often times if they're new to their environment, they are scared to come out of their hides and seek out the food, but will come to the door of their hides to get it.

Hope that helps :wavey:

Thanks.

I think we have been handling too much to early (from advice on another post). I'll give him a rest for 3 or 4 days and have another go.

I would follow Jen's advise and wait 5 to 7 days. 3 or 4 may be enough, but why risk the chance of unnecessary stress.

Here's my .02 for newly purchased hatchling. I handle them just enough to look them over, then put them in their viv for 5 days COMPLETELY undisturbed, warm side set to 86. I attempt my feedings in a seperate container around dusk since that's on their awake schedule. I just let the mice thaw at room temperature for an hour and just before feeding, rinse under warm water. About 15 minutes after the food has been in the stomach, I put the container in the viv and let them come out on their own.

It's suggested, no handling for 48 hours after a meal, so I leave alone for 72 hours. In fact, for the 1st 4 months, I handle them only to take them out to feed and I would clean their viv at the same time, so I didn't have to bother them any other time.

Is all this a bit extreme? Probably, but after that 4 months, they are calm, handle without any problem, and seem to be pretty stress free and are eating and growing like weeds.

For me, and I can only speak for myself, 4 months of self disipline is a small price to pay for the next 15 or so years you may own your animal.

It can be hard, since handling them is one of the reasons we get them, but I had an easy fix for that, too. I purchased an adult.:grin01:

again thanks for the advice. i think Zing Zing is at least 9 months and certain he's used to handling. I think it's the change in environment. I'll leave off handling for a week and try again, using the cup technique.
