Feeding!

Hello all!

I am new to Cornies and was wondering about my new Anerythristic corn, Jasper. He is 2 years old, will feed on dead prey, is kept in a 3 foot vivarium with under substrate heating and a heat lamp ( both controlled via a thermostat). He last fed on the 8th July ( rat weaner which was "brained" ) and refuses to take anything now. Could it be the weather we are having or am I doing something wrong. He has a temp gradient, water to relax / drink in and a place to hide when he feels like it. Any hints or tips for me?

<Do you know how he was fed at his previous home?

Some snakes develop a taste for rats, corns, chicks, or whatever it is they were fed and it can be a little hard at first to get them to switch, others will be fine with whatever you put in front of them.

One idea might be to feed him in the evening and try to not disturb him as he might just be a shy one. Warming to prey to body temperature is also handy.

An adult corn will go a few months without food and not suffer any real ill effects so don't trouble yourself too much for now.

Also - remember to not offer food too often (once a week will do), as you don't want to condition him to refuse every time.

Good luck and keep us informed,

Feding!

Thanks Adele

I am still a "baby" at this and am a bit neurotic over "JASPER" and his health! My usual hobby is Guinea Pigs ( www.gpigsruss.co.uk ) so all this is new to me. My current feeding regime it seems is wrong! I have been trying him every night to feed, wasting what I have offerd by the next day. He is very active, wanting to get out even but it seems that its corny breeding time!! He is responding well to handling and even chills out when I stroke the back of his head! Its been a month since he fed and I have tried all sorts to tempt him ( not tried live food yet though as I am not keen and its illegal over here to do it! ) As a newie I would appreciate any handy tips and an idiots guide to feeding cornys just so I know he is being cared for properly. I never thought I would love a corny!!!!

Welcome to a fellow Yorkshireman! Your setup sounds fine, but could you tell us what temperatures your actually managing to get at the moment? Warm end and cool end? It has been extremely warm here recently.

I suspect you might be better to leave him alone for a week, only disturbing him to change water and spot clean, then try a smaller mouse rather than a weaner rat. At two years old, I suspect a weaner rat might be a bit big for him. Warm it up nice and hot and see if he goes for it.

Good luck!
