First Feeding

Hello All,

I just got my first two on wednesday 26 May (Orton and Hitchcock). I have a 30"X12"X12" tank set up for them with plenty of hides, water and climbing branches (I am aware of the risks of keeping two snakes in the same viv I am not here to debate that). I know you are supposed to way about 3 days to handle them and then only over the top of the viv. I want to feed them in a separate, smaller viv. Is it ok to pick them up just to move them, one at a time, into the smaller viv for feeding? The other question I have is, the smaller viv won't fit into the bigger everyday viv, is it ok to pick them up after feeding just to put them in the other container? I am planning on feeding them on friday morning 28 May because I have to go away on a long weekend is this too soon to feed them?

Doing your handling over the viv is a safety precaution, especially for people new to snakes. If you drop your snake, they land in the viv, so they don't get away, and landing on substrate reduces the chance of injury.

That said, it's not an absolute. There is nothing wrong with handling your snake from viv to feeding area. Still, it is better to have them close by, instead of walking your snake through the house.

As for moving them back, you can give them a little extra time if you want to play it safe. 10 or 15 minutes after feeding so that they calm down. Also, wash your hands after feeding, before picking up your snake. You don't want to smell like mouse while your snake is in an eating mode. You might get your first bite as well, not that corn bites are worth fussing over (or so I've been told).

As for feeding on Friday, did you ask when they were last fed when you picked them up? Can you contact original owner to find out how long since they were fed? I fed mine the same day I brought her home from a reptile show. My mistake, but nothing bad came of it. If they'll take food, then it's probably okay. If not, I wouldn't worry. A few extra days between feedings won't hurt unless they are already underfed.

Caveat, I'm something of a newbie to snakes. Well read, but lacking experience. I'll let the more experienced back up or correct my advice.

Since this will be the first feeding, and you won't be there, I wouldn't do it. Feed them the evening/night of the day you get back. They will be fine without food.

Also, your feeding plan should work out. Just make sure they have plenty of hides so they don't get stressed from competing for the best hide.

Also, a personal kudos on the co-habbing. It amazes me how everyone freaks when they hear "my corns live together" (granted, there are reasons for it). Just make sure they stay healthy and similar in size. ;)

Thank you for the advise. I am back in town. The two little guys are doing well. I am going to try for a feeding tonight. I hope it goes well.
