First Field Trip

I am planning on going out to a rural area in Alma, KS (Flint Hills) this sat with the bf to see what all we can find. I'm pretty sure we won't find any corn snakes, but would anyone have any helpful tips to first of all stay safe, but find some local reptiles? The bf used to go all the time about 10 years ago and used to see Eastern Collard Lizards and Great Plains Skinks. So we are hoping for a good day of hunting. :) I of course plan on taking my camera. Hope to share some good pics of some neat reptiles, if not of at least some cows. lol

Thanks!

April

I would go as early in the morning as you can. Flip and replace any flat objects- tin, carpet, cardboard, plywood. Look near water.

Read Bill Love's recent report for ideas!

April,

I hate to refer anyone to another site, but you ought to peruse FieldHerpForum.com:

http://www.fieldherpforum.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=1&sid=b72efbc84899938d30693d469c9cec64

There are quite a few herpers on there from that neck of the woods. Use the search feature and the keyword "Kansas" and I'm sure you find some good stuff. I tried it to see what it would produce an there are tons of posts on Kansas herping.

Thanks for the advice and the link! I'm getting pretty excited. My bf has been talking about doing this since we first met back in june, so it's finally that time of year to go. Yippie! I'm already making a list of the things I need to take with me. For sure the camera! And I went out and bought a first aid kit for the suv, needed that anyways.

But I hope to share some good pics!

Thanks again!

April

You should get a tetanus shot if yours isn't up to date- you could step on something sharp or get scratched, or, my doctor seems to think I need a tetanus shot in case I get bit by _anything..._

And I'd put stuff for insect stings in your first aid kit- like an antihistamine and that stick for bites- can't think of the name of it, but every camping store has it. Like Sting Away or something. And sunscreen. And they make poison ivy blocker now- I've only used it a few times, trail running, but I haven't gotten poison ivy.

Have fun!

Just wanted to say I had a great time. We found quite a few Collard Lizards and ended up bringing home 5 of them. We also found a couple of skinks and different snakes. Not sure on what type of snakes a couple were, but one was a ring neck, and two were speckled King snakes I think. :) I got a couple of different pics. Sorry some aren't the greatest. Moving objects and I didn't use the right mode on the camera till later. Oops. :bang:
But here they are. First is of the field we were looking in. Basically just lifting up rocks to find our goodies.

FANTASTIC! Great results. That King Snake (both of them) are gorgeous. Are you hooked on herping now?

Wow, love the kings! That's what I'd have been bringing home... The big skink is nice, too. I've never seen a Ring-Neck. (They are supposed to do horribly in captivity.)

WOW!! Amazing finds! I love the baby king and the ringneck! I don't think the question is "are you going to go out again?" but "When are you going out again?!?" LOL Great finds!

Yes I'd have to say I'm hooked! It was alot of fun! The bf is still kicking himself for not bringing home the baby king. Oh well, maybe next time.

thanks!
