First handling session!!

Well I can't say I wasn't nervous about this! I took out her hides and then took out the last one she was hiding under and went to pick her up. She darted across the cage. Tried again not too quickly but firmly and she darted off again. As she was darting off again I managed to pick her up and she wasn't a happy bunny!

After five mins she calmed right down and seemed fairly happy going back and forth across my hands. When I put her back in her viv she even took a minute to climb off!

Were you first handling experiences anything like mine? How long does it take for them to get better about being handled?

Thanks
Nic.x

It takes 'em a little while to get used to it. Some of 'em never do, but then there are some that almost beg to be taken out. It all depends on the snake. Glad you had a good first handling session!

They're a lot easier to handle when they aren't little 8 or 12 gram things, too. Once they get up to 35 or 50 or so they are a lot more comfortable.

Plus there is more of them to catch. My little babies--now at 13g--are much harder to find and catch then the 40g. But they don't seem to be calming down after several months. They don't act like they want to bite, more like get away as much as possible, death rolls all the way!

I got my corn whene she was only about 11 inches long. She was a tiny thing. I didn't really follow the rules about letting her settle for a week. (impatiance is my firtue) I took her out little more than 24 hours after I got her. She never really darted across the viv, she actually quite enjoyed being handled. after about 20 minutes, I put her back in and she drank from her water dish and she just slithered and explored the viv and thrashing all the aspen chips all around the viv :p. I've been holding her for about 30 mins a day and she is very tame, she let about anyone handle them. (except for my dad, because he's a little too rough).

She doesnt really mind the dog smell that I sometimes have all over my clothes, she doesnt mind at all. :) I think I scored a very tame snake when I got her about 3 months ago.

Glad to hear that you and your snake are bonding already, I hope your snake will think of you as a favorite tree to chill on.

Just handled her again today. It wasn't so difficult getting her out and she calmed down a lot quicker. She still tried to run for it though! I'm really hoping she'll get used to being handled.
