First Strike, First Blood!

For the very first time in all of my almost 25 years, I was bitten by a snake today! It was IRA, my usually sweet Okeetee boy. Funny thing is, I saw it all happening in slow motion and am pretty sure I could have avoided the strike. Maybe my subconcious mind was going, "Just get it over with, ya big sissy!"

Anywho, I bled like a stuck pig, but I got him out of his tank anyway. I think he looked more suprised about landing a bite than I was about being bitten. And he was on his very best behavior after that. :D

So, lessons learned today:

1. Do NOT get lazy and feed your snakes in their normal vivs.

2. Corn bites don't really hurt.

3. Corns have two rows of teeth on the upper jaw. Not sure why I didn't know this before getting chomped, but a pretty neat way to learn and a lesson I'd not soon forget!

Welcome to the bite club!!!

They do bleed quite a bit, I guess because the teeth are so sharp. I always think it bleeds more than it hurts.

Thanks i don't even own one yet and im scared of getting bitten haha (im actually more worried about mites)

So if you get bitten how do you remove the snake ?

Corns normally bite and let go before you even realize what happened. Cali kings and some other species will try to eat your whole hand. In that case, running them under cold water will probably do the trick. Or try a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol on it.

How often do corns bite?

How are boas ?

Corns bite VERY rarely. Even some breeders have never been bit. Even if they did bite, it doesn't hurt. But yeah, unless you own a lot of snakes, your chances of being bit are extremely low if you treat the snake right.

Boas are docile, but not as docile as corns, and they're stronger - not a beginner snake. Very large boas can even pose a slight danger to beginners not because of their bites, but because of their constriction ability.

 I've got a corn named Ira!
He's never bitten me though, and he's my biggest boy.

Corns rarely bite, and when they do it's usually a bite and release. Unlike Cali kings. My Cal king, Valik, tries to eat my fingers every time I take him out!

This is 100% myth. Corn snakes do not bite more/'mistake your hand as food' if you feed them in their viv.

I disagree. I feed my older snakes in the tubs they are housed in and several of them will strike at me (and bite if I'm not quick enough) when I open the lid thinking I have their dinner. It isn't until they realize that dinner isn't forthcoming that I can safely take them out. Most of my snakes don't strike at me ever, but the really aggressive feeders will just about every time. It's called "conditioning" and to call it 100% a myth is just wrong.

I'm with Susan.

The fact that an individual's experience doesn't conform to the experience of many others doesn't make the others' statements "a myth." Corns can learn like any complex animal, and if they learn that an open lid means food is incoming, they learn to go into feeding mode when the lid is opened. That means they're more likely to bite if regularly fed in their vivs.

How likely are they to bite with this conditioning, you ask? That answer depends upon many things, not least of which is the individual snake's temperament. Not "guaranteed to bite. Not even "highly likely to bite." Just "more likely to bite."

Cool, tell that to mine. They should know - they're not up to date with this. Especially the '06, as feeding him in his viv made him highly reactive to hands moving around in the space.

But like I said, he's probably just behind the times.
