First time breeding...got eggs!

Well, not sure how many remember me asking about breeding before, but I am very happy! Came home from work yesterday and found 5 slugs, with more to come!

So left her alone and this morning I found 5 more slugs and 5 good ones!! This is my first ever attempt at breeding anything so I'm very excited!!

I had no idea that she was pregnant, just thought perhaps she was. Friends told me no way, I didn't cool her or the sire, etc. Chondro friends asked if she ovulated and swelled up, nope, didn't notice any of that. I didn't even see any copulation!

So I was very surprised! :grin01::santa:

Here she is:

How long does incubation last? I have the eggs on vermiculite in a tub located in one of my chondro cages (temps stay around 82-84 deg.)

congrats! glad you're so excited even with all those slugs, but honestly for your first year it's nice to have such a manageable number. pretty snow too! any hets on these two?

typically at those temps incubation should be close to 60 days.

I aim for 84 degrees and incubation has averaged at 64-65 days over the years.

crappy picture, but it looks like maybe 6 are good. 1 is doubtful, and I put that one off to the side as you can see in the picture.

I hope that they do hatch for me.

I have them in that tub with a lid on it, with 3 small holes (and I mean small) on each side. Is there anything I should do other than check on them daily? I don't plan on taking the lid off.

Congrats on the eggs. Very exciting.

Just so you know you don't have to hybernate your snake for a better egg count. I don't hybernate mine and the one girl I bred this year gave me 18 fertile eggs and 0 slugs.

Hmm this is my first year breeding as well. I expected to get a clutch like yours mostly slugs with a few good ones, since it's my females first year breeding as well. I bred two of my girls and got 14 fertile eggs from one and 16 from the other, I couldn't believe it. I would have been thrilled like you if they had laid a few fertile ones. One clutch has been in for 6 weeks and the other for 7 weeks now. At temps 82-84 degrees I'm expecting them around day 60 ish. we'll see though, I have my hatchling containers almost ready.

If you don't have it already get Kathy & Billy Love's book, there is a huge section in there on breeding and it would answer a lot of your questions.
