First Time Snake Owner and New Member

CornyApollo

Proud Owner of Apollo
Hello! I am a new member to this site, and I am also a first time snake owner. Apollo is an 8 year old Cornsnake, and I adopted him from my boyfriend's mother today. Apollo was not being properly loved or taken care of. We intend to break him of his bad habits and have him join our family! I also have a baby Bearded Dragon and Cat, Mouse. I never thought I would own ANY reptiles, let alone a snake. I look forward to holding him (or any snake for that matter) after he gets used to his new habitat.

I look forward to being a part of this forum and getting to know Apollo in the process.

Apollo has a tendency to bite when the cage is opened. Except when he is well fed. We fed him today in the tank we adopted him in (only 10 gallons). We will be transferring him tomorrow, and when we break him of his biting habits I will be posting pics. He shed a week or so ago, and he is beautiful and new. :)

I'm happy to see another Texan! Do you breed your snakes?

hopefully he'll calm down for ya'll soon!
no breeding yet, maybe a couple of years from now.doing alot of research now :)

Putting on a thin pair of cotten gloves... kinda like the ones that look like they are made for kids but stretch to fit adult hands. You dont need too much protection since their teeth arent that long but haveing them on will give you abit of confidence and that will help HIM over his fear of you :) I am sure that is why he is strikeing like that :) Just take it slow and easy and CALM. Nothing changes overnight but he will get there :)

He has been handled before, and when he is properly fed he doesn't bite. But he won't hesitate to do so. I may wear gloves to give myself confidence when handling him.

hi apollo i have also recently purchased my first corn snake (looking at buying a second) and i have had so much fun handling her and learning about her i am sure after time your corn snake will become better and enjoy being handled :)

Yes, I am sure he has been handled before but WE all smell different and that can sometimes make them abit more fearful.... thats all I was saying :) The gloves do help tho if you are worried. I used to do that. :) Like maybe 20 years ago hehe It is more startleing than hurtful. Been bit by many smaller ones (up to a year) and now I just yell for someone to get the camera :D LOL

That's great! I have to admit, I am more hesitant to hold Apollo because I'm paranoid when it comes to being bit by animals. I know, however, that it isn't that bad. Has you snake ever striked? Do you feed her in tank or in a separate bin?

hi welcome i am fairly new to this site too but a word of advise don't put toast on to grill while on here i just burnt mine again !!! lol

i have had my snake for about 2 weeks now and i fed her out of the tank and yes she has striked me once whilst i was typing on the computer she liked my fingers moving lol so was my fault infact it didnt hurt at all,im looking at purchasing another corn snake but still not sure which morph to get as there are some nice ones
