First time snake owners in MO

Hi all!

We just got our first corn snake yesterday from someone I would call a major idiot and am so glad she is not with him anymore. The agreement was that she was supposed to come with a light, rock, 3 pinkies and a live male mouse for my breeding colony (no I am not feeding live). All I got was the snake who had just been fed and $5 to get my own male mouse. In exchange they got ferret supplies. So now next Monday I have to go 40 miles to the nearest pet shop (the reason for raising my own mice) to get 4 pinkies and a male mouse so I can keep my snake fed. Oh well at least I have her and she will be well cared for by someone who knows the difference between a mouse and a rat and remembers to have everything promised.

She is about 13 inches long, came from a breeder in KS originally (I do not know who it is), and is what I think is called a red albino? That is what the guy said. She is red with touches of orangish-yellow and red eyes. Lovely. She is also mid-moult. Or shed. Not sure of correct terminology.

This is our frst snake but we have researched for well over 2 years and knew that a corn would be our first. We look forward to sharing and learning.

Um, FYI geiniandkathy is my ebay name I use it everywhere. I am Kathy and my husband is Shawn we own Scarlet (the snake) Geini is my mom :crazy01:

Yay more people from Missouri! I am fairly new here as well but everyone here is great any questions you have will be answered by people who really know what they are talking about. Fair warning the hobby is addicting, we got our first corn one month ago and we just bought our second yesterday at the STL reptile show.

I do have a big question. She was the smaller of the two we had to choose from (wish I could have gotten her sister) and they were both fed the same sized pinkies yesterday. She was seen to eat and there was no sign of regurgitation. Yet I never saw a noticeble lump where the pinky might be inside her? Any idea what that means?

LOL I keep hearing how addictive it is. So far I love having a snake. We are kinda far from pet shops so I have to have my own colony of mice. I don't have a co2 machine or anything like that. How can I "take out" the mice to freeze them if I do not have one of these? I was told to just put them in a tupperware in the freezer over night. I do not want to be cruel?

Hehehe, we plan to get another corn about this time next year :santa: late Christmas present/early birthday :nyah:

Welcome...

After a day my snake doesn't show much of a lump anymore either. Its possible a little larger pinky could be fed. Many pets stores sell pinkys as "pinkys", with no size specification. There is a little variation in size. The pet store I go to will look through them for the size I want if I want real small or average, or larger.

Good suppliers and breeders and stores will have them sorted by weight so that you can get different sizes very easily. Someone else can maybe give you better info on how long you should see that "lump".

Personally, I think it was very irresponsible to feed the snake right before selling/trading/moving/stressing at all. Would have been better to just let the new owner know it hadn't been fed since x day.

Anyway, I'm sure she's in good hands now. Good luck and take care.

first off welcome to the forum. youll find all your answers youll ever need here. if you never noticed the lump then she probably got of ate another pinky. but dont over feed. and a snake sheds, birds molt lol. i try not to feed when theyre in shed because sometimes it can cause a problem when they are shedding because of the lump in their body. and yes somed people call that snake a red albino but the people in this forum would call it an amelanistic corn snake. which means it lacks all black pigments in its body. i have one also. once again congrats on joining the community.

Thanks, I was asking because the pinkies were the same size and the other snake was bigger than my Scarlet and it had a really noticeble lump. I'll see if I can find the munson feeding plan you mentioned thanks!

Oh can corns have gerbil pups?

I will be breeding my own feeders so I will be able to manage her feeding specifically myself. As to how long the "lump" was there she was fed 2 hours before I got to her and there was no lump at that time. She was being kept in a 1/4 lb deli plastic cup thing. Had been in it for 4 hours (since they got the snakes ready to go). I was just told the pinkies were the same size. So who knows. I won't have more pinkies until Tuesday, will it hurt her to go a few extra days longer than normal for her feeding? She is used to being fed on Sundays.

No problem on the Missouri comment I abhor it! The whole state!

Thanks for the welcome. I hope on my shed thread I did not come off as pissy. I just wanted it understood I did not put her in a poor shed, I got her that way.

Hehehe, yeah. I have to get pics of Scarlet. But I want to wait until AFTER her current shed finishes.

There are instructions here somewhere(I think in the feeders section) for making a chamber or just using dry ice in a container.
