Frightened snake!!!

A while ago we got a lot of help from this forum on feeding Salvador as he wouldn't eat for a long time. He's our juvenile corn and 1st snake, so we thought we'd give it a try for this...

He's eaten 3 times now in a row (stopped refusing, yay!) but we're using the method where you brain a warm pinky and put it in a small deli cup and put the snake in, put the lid on and then put it inside his closed viv. We cover the viv up with a towel and leave him and he always eats fine. BUT the problem is that he really doesn't like going in the box- he thrashes around and tries his hardest to escape. We were advised to put the mouse in 1st, which we're doing, so we can try and get him in quickly and then not disturb him. As he's a fussy eater we're trying to keep handling to a minimum- at least until we're confident about his eating habits as we don't want to stress him. We used to handle him a little more and he calmed down and explored quite quickly, whereas now we're only checking his temps from the outside and only touching him to put him in the box and to check he's ok every so often, so should we hold him to calm him down before putting him in the deli cup? We're a little worried as today was particularly stressful to feed him, but he did eat up the pinky and was curled up when we checked him after a couple of hours.

Sorry about the long post and thanks in advance for any help! :)

I'd say that if he's eating, then you're already doing the right thing.

If he's stressed by going in the box, I think that increased handling just beforehand might actually put him off and stress him further.

You're already winning the battle, which is the best you can wish for - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'd worry about his quality of life once he's an established and reliable feeder. Until then, it's belt-and-braces.

I wouldn't handle him before putting him in his feeding bin. Maybe it's time to try a slightly larger bin? I'll go take pics of the sizes I use and make a post. How many days apart are you feeding him? Kel does have a good point about if it ain't broke don't fix it, however. I guess I'd call him reliable after a couple months.

Yeah we thought maybe a larger bin, but there are pics on the forum from when someone else advised on sizes for feeding boxes and we seem to be doing the right thing based on them. He's getting quite long for the box, I don't think he could stretch himself out completely inside it. Thank you for your time and effort in taking the photos :) We're feeding him every 5 days and he's eating every time now so we assume that's ok for him?
