From 11 to 9 snakes in 3 days

What a bad week this has been. I started this hobby in January, and was so proud of myself for researching, following advice... I don't post a lot of questions here, mainly because 99% of my questions have already been answered in previous threads. But I read this forum constantly and really prided myself on doing so well with my snakes. Then Starkist, one of my '09 normal girls escaped - my own stupid fault for not making sure the tank lid was tightly fastened. And our little ghost-girl Luna died. Just out of the blue. She refused to eat last week, and I figured she was getting ready to shed. When my daughter picked her up the other night, she seemed unusually lethargic. She stopped breathing and went limp right there in my daughter's hands. I am at a complete loss as to why she died. I know these things happen, but you can't help but feel guilty when a creature is 100% dependent on you for its well-being and it dies. :( As for Starkist, there's evidence that she's still lurking in the house, so all hope is not dead yet... If she were to get out of the house, at least she's a normal - brown and black - so she stands a better chance of survival than if she were bright orange and white like my candy cane. I think I'm probably just trying to make myself feel better by saying that... OK, just needed to mope a little bit..

OMGosh girl I am so sorry for you loses. I have been in your shoes re the escaped snake. Look in window seals, under refrig (there is a warm area under there) & in closets that are full of things to hide under & of course the couch. I hope this helps & I hope you find her. HTH's

My daughter Jennifer (who is 9 years old) wrote this to Starkist. She has it next to her tank on the floor. She is hoping that Starkist will slither past her cage and see that we are "calling" her...

Awww Man she is been through a lot. Bless her hrt! I know when I lost my little guy. I could not sleep for days. I put a heating pad on the floor in the kitchen. I made homemade bottle traps stuck them under the sinks & on the 3rd day found him under the refrig where the little heater thingy is. It was the BEST feeling! Mine escaped from his feeding bag & he was only 3 mths old. That was a couple of yrs ago & he is just fine now. Don't give up looking & look in weird places you would not think of looking. Prayers go out to you guys!!!

Oh geez. Poor kid. Well about the sudden death, that really does happen sometimes with the littler ones for no apparent reason. About the escape, good luck! If you have mammals, watch them closely--they will often "find" the loose snake for you.

My prayers go out that you find sunkist and I also understand what you and your daughter are going through with the loss of the ghost. (((HUGS)))

I'm so sorry you're having heartaches at the moment. I hope Starkist turns up safe, sound and soon. You're doing your best and taking good care of the lives entrusted to you. It's really hard to lose one, especially without knowing why. Most of us have been there and can sympathize. Don't beat yourself up over things that happened in the past.

I'll say a prayer that you're back to 10 snakes tomorrow!
