Frozen Mice

Ok. I've had my snake for a little over a month now. It's a 4ft Wild Corn. When I first caught him I bought 4 adult frozen mice from my local pet store. It was time for me to get some more mice so I went back and asked for some more. They said they didn't have any frozen ones but I could give them a days notice and they'd freeze some or I could just get live mice and stick them in the freezer. They said that's how they do it. For some reason, I always thought the mice were killed using some sort of other method than freezing them to death. Is this normal or should I look at ordering them on-line? I will probably give him a live mouse this time and see if he takes it immediately. He goes after the frozen ones right away, so that may be the solution.

Thanks,

Confused... :)

It's not normal for feeder mice, and it's not good. They shouldn't just be "sticking them in the freezer". :eek1:

I would definetally look for some online. I get mine from Rodentpro and i've heard good things about BigCheeseRodents. Live animals should never be put in a freezer. The blood can cyristlize and they can explode. Good luck!

What? I have never heard of this happening.

Same thing happens when you put them in the mircrowave though they do wiggle more if you do that.

I've never heard of that either, nor have I ever seen an animal that is frozen, exploded......Do you have documentation of that? Anyway, most commercially available mice that are frozen are killed humanely with CO2, then frozen.

yeah, it happened to my friend. someone told her to do the same thing she put it in there and when she thawed it, all of the middles came out throught a slit that was cut when the mouse expanded.

Thanks. I just wanted to make sure that my experience was not normal. I will not shop at this pet store in the future. I'll look on-line for frozen mice. Thanks again...

Just a hint to ordering on line. If you have any friends near you that have rodent eaters of any type, ask them to order with you. This works out even less expensive per mouse if you can order bulk lots. Most places offer lots of 25 as a minimum, add $15 or so shipping. In my opinion it makes more sense to order as many as can be used in 3-4 months for the one shipping cost.
