Frustrated w/ feeding my young snake!

Codeman_111

Hi, I'm addicted to corn.
I've had my new corn for two weeks, as of today. He has eaten two small pinkys already, which were both within the first week. I've been trying to feed him again this week. This is the second failed attempt since he ate over a week ago. I waited three days since the last refusal and still no luck this afternoon. I always feed in a separate enclosure, but he seems more interested in escaping. Now, I put him in the smaller enclosure, inside a paper bag with the thawed pinky. Should I just leave him for the rest of the evening? Will he need any additional warmth? Our home stays around 65-70 during the day. He's in a small critter carrier w/ the lid on, which is sitting on top of his tank. I put him inside the bag w/ the pinky, inside the critter cage, with the bag slightly rolled up at the top. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
CoDe~

I'd try putting the smaller feeding enclosure inside his normal tank around the middle of the heat gradient, and leaving him overnight. That should keep him at his normal temp and give him the opportunity to take his time over eating.

Don't stress him by offering food too often. It might be worth now waiting a week, not handling him and trying again after that. As he ate two pinkies last week, that shouldn't cause him a problem.

Also, he might be going into a shed - some can refuse while they're blue. Does he seem to be slightly lighter in colour at the moment?

When mine seem more interested in escaping a closed plastic feeding container, I just put a towel or T-shirt over it.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies! Guess what!? After posting the thread and browsing a bit, I checked back on him to find him at the top of the bag! He had crawled up into the spot that I folded over and his head was peeking out the top. So I let him make his way back into the tank and I checked the bottom of the paper bag. He ate already! Maybe he's just shy and doesn't want us to watch him eat.. LoL! Yay, so that's three small meals in two weeks for my little guy! I've decided to name him 'Silky Johnston'. He is doin' great and I greatly appreciate all the members here on CS that provide us, that are new to corns, alot of great advice!

Thanks again!

So what kind of feeding schedule do you have him on? He should be being fed every five days- I wouldn't go any more often, and also wouldn't go a whole week.

I've had him for two weeks as of today, so my schedule isn't quite set in stone since he's pretty new. I also don't know how often the pet store was feeding him. The feedings have been as follows.

I brought him home the evening of 3-4.

First feeding was on 3-8.

2nd feeding was only three days later, on 3-11.
(There was no lump after 24 hours of his first meal, quite a small pinky.)

(Refusal this last sunday on 3-16.)

Now success today, on 3-18.

Should the next meal be offered this following Sunday, the 23rd?

Thanks,
CoDe~
