Fun Animals I Work With

AshleyShadows

It piss me so bad.
I'm a pre-vet student at Texas A&M University, and until I go to vet school (to be a mixed small and herp vet) I work as a student worker at our Wildlife Center and a tech at the teaching hospital's zoo medicine ward. I get to play with some of the coolest animals ever. I'll post more as they come along.

Jack, my favorite ostrich

Thanks for looking!

Hey that's cool. Thats a job I would like to go to daily.
What was the wolf treated for??? Looks like a sore on this nose.
Thanks for the pics.

Thanks guys! I definitely have fun, and it's different every single day.

The wolf was in for numerous things. He had a cancerous growth behind his eye, and the other eye was just a glass ball from previous problems. He also had MRSA which is awful (of course I found out AFTER I was all huggy feely on him). He got through the entire chemo treatment which is amazing because most animals can't. Honestly it doesn't look good for him, and we've been trying to convince his owner to let him just go to Heaven. The man sold his car and house to pay for the treatment; there's just nothing left for him to sell.

That's a shame. I know if I'd sold everything I had to save an animal, I wouldn't take too kindly to just giving up and letting him go, either!

Dewey is a butt head! He's the most spoiled jerk there ever was. Highly entertaining though :) We gave him a bowling ball and had hours of fun. His sons are even worse (such is imbreeding >.>)

It is a shame about the wolf. He's only 6 too, and he was actually used in police work. His owner would do anything for him.

Couple more animals..looking forward to playing with a red kangaroo tomorrow. I've only ever worked with grays, so this should be new and exciting.

Oliver the prairie dog. Little butthead kept pulling out his staples after he got neutered, so he had to wear special "pants" for a while.
Little known fact: prairie dogs are about 100 times smellier than ferrets.

Eeeee screech owl! He did not want to eat his f/t mice.

More to share!

Yay for huge rodents!

This is a great horned owl we dubbed "Mr. Peepers" for his eye issues. He was shot by some jerk.

This is Gwen, the red kangaroo. She also had eye issues.

Lucky the African goose. Guys...never, ever name your pets "Lucky". They're just going to get attacked by a bobcat if you do.

Here's "Kingsford" the red shouldered hawk. He flew down someone's chimney after being shot. Ever tried giving a hawk a bath? Super fun :D

Though I'm not really a rat person (like them ok, but would never own one), I really do miss feeding Troy his banana-flavored Ensure every day. This guy made it well past 3 years!

Lol, I don't even know why this red-tailed hawk is here right now. I just know that he makes me laugh.

EDIT: I forgot to add that the wolf was euthanized at home last week. After a failed chemo treatment, and the cancer spreading fast, it was the best thing for him.

He was really mad today because we made a grave error - feeding him several fuzzies rather than a rat. He just looked at them like he had no idea what to do lol.

That's so sad to hear about the wolf, I'm sure it was the best thing for the wolf, but his owner must be devastated. Still, you do have a really cool job!

Thanks, guys! I certainly have fun. I was so sad about the wolf too. There are some wolf hybrids that need to be rehomed in the area, so we're hoping he can take them in. He's got an amazing enclosure if they turn out to be less than tame. Otherwise, they're pretty much house dogs.
